In doing some research, I came across an American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology press release, dated March 20, 2001. It states,
"Herbal interventions derived from Chinese herbal medicine may be of value in the treatment of peanut allergy and other IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity, researchers reported today at the AAAI Annual Meeting. Xiu-Min Li,MD, and colleagues from Mount Sinai School of Medicine [Dr. Hugh Sampson is one of her primary collaborators!] and John Hopkins University tested the effects of a traditional Chinese medicine, WMW-LZ(FA-1). The formula was tested on peanut hypersensitivity reactions in a mouse model of peanut allergy. Researchers found that FA-1 can significantly reverse established peanut allergy and protect sensitized mice from anaphylactic reactions following the introduction of peanut. After one week, the FA-1 treated mice showed a 50% reduction in peanut specific IgE levels ... as well as normal levels of plasma histamine and no clear symptoms of systemic anaphylaxis."
I find this fascinating. Does anyone have any further information on this line of research? What herb or herbal mix is this?
They've moved on to a slightly different formula, called FAHF-2, and are in clinical trials!
