In our monthly news letter we have a health corner it reads.....

The Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition has made it a high priority to boost consumer and food industry awareness of food allergies.

A food allergy is a immune system response to a food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful.
Once the immune system decides that a particular food is harmful,it creates specific antibodies to it.

The next time the individual eats that food, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, including histamine,in order to protect the body. These chemicals trigger a cascade of allergic systems that can affect the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin,or cardiovascular system.

Scientists estimate that approximately 11 million Americans suffer from true food allergies. At the present time, there is no cure for food allergy.
Avoidance is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction.

Proteins in these eight major foods are estimated to cause 90 percent of the allergic reactions in the United States:
treenuts, peanuts, soybeans, milk, eggs, fish, wheat.and crustaceans (such as shrimp and crabs).

Thank You Mr A.!!!

I write a FOOD FOR THOUGHT column for our monthly school newsletter.

I love putting stuff like that in.

Sometimes I list peanut(butter) free lunches, or recipes. I also find it a great way to remind people of the nutritional value of eating fruits and veggies.

I always put in reminders and 'thank yous' for not sending nuts of any kind.

I also just got hired to be a lunch monitor. This way, I can keep an eye on the 'newbies' who are sending lunches for the first time.

Anything with nuts will be put into a baggie, and sent home with a note explaing why it can't be consumed at school.

I'm so happy. I hope it goes smoothly.
