Peanut-Free/Nut-Free Directory
Our directory is intended as a resource for people with peanut and nut allergies. It contains foods, helpful products, and much more.
My 23 mo. old son is PA.
I am nursing my 6 week old son.
FOR the health of my sons I avoid peanuts/nuts myself. Since most chocolates have some kind of warning on them about nuts/peanuts I have had to stay away from chocolate too. I am with them 24/7 and never even get a chance to have anytime away
when I can get any. I am looking for Peanut/nut free chocolate. I know there is a peanut free chocolate candy making company but you have to order from there. Is there any chocolate that is PEANUT/ NUT free that I can just buy at the local grocery store that you have heard for SURE is 100% safe? I know I am not supposed to have chocolate in huge amounts because I am nursing but was just craving a little bite here and there.
I don't want to put either of my sons at risk. My 5 yr. anniversary is this weekend and my request to my husband to "get away" was to be able to eat some chocolate without exposing my 23 mo. old son. He won't be with us BUT my 6 week old son who I am nursing WILL BE. I told my husband that I don't care where we go as long as I can find some chocolate that I can eat. Sounds crazy doesn't it. Well, that's how much I love and miss eating chocolate.
So, in order for me to have some chocolate it has to be PEANUT FREE since I am nursing.
I don't even know IF there is any such thing but I DO know that some of you may have a heads up on which ones I can't have and which ones I can.
Maybe this seems like a selfish request. I feel bad for even asking for myself but if I knew a safe chocolate even for my son to have one day too I would feel great. He can't have it right now because of some of his other allergies in addition to him having the PA.
Getting to have some SAFE chocolate really would make my weekend. I had to avoid nuts/peanuts the entire pregnancy and I still plan to avoid nuts/peanuts while nursing but was just thinking how nice it would be if I could find some chocolate that was Peanut/nut free.
Hope there is someone out there that can understand. I don't know how other parents of PA children do it. I just pretend like I am allergic too so I don't put my sons in danger.
For one weekend away though...it would be nice to not have to pretend and satisfy my
craving. Safely, of course, I am still nursing!
Any suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated!---momomom

USA:
Regular size Hershey's bar, Hershey's kisses, Rolo, York Peppermint Pattie, Nestle Coffee Crisp (if available in your area), and I think I heard "Kit Kat bites" are safe? (but Kit Kats are not safe!) check the labels

Just to supplement Erik's info a bit:
By "regular size" Hershey bar, he means the ones you find in packages of 6 at the grocery store. At least, that's the only Hershey bar that Hershey told me was made in a nut-free facility when I called.
Hershey's kisses may sometimes be safe, but I have definitely seen bags of kisses (and hugs) labeled as being made in a facility that processes almonds. I'm assuming this is a geographic thing.
Peppermint Patties -- safe from what I've read.
Nestle Coffee Crisp -- I've never heard of these being sold in the US. I've had some from Canada, and they are wonderful, though!
KitKat Bites don't have a warning on them in my area, but since they also make Reese's Bites, I'd call Hershey first to double check.
Other suggestions: Tootsie Rolls, Charleston Chews and anything made by Vermont Nut Free Chocolates.
Best,
Debbie
We really like Hershey's Sixlets, which taste like a slightly sweeter version of M&Ms. They are made in a peanut free facility. The only problem is that most stores consider Sixlets a seasonal item... but the good news is that most places carry them for Easter. Go stock up! We had heard that Walmart carries Sixlets, so this weekend I drove the half hour there and bought 8 bags.
My husband and I think they taste more like Whoppers (a chocolate covered malted milk ball) than M&Ms, although they feel like M&Ms in your mouth (they're not nearly as hard or big as Whoppers).
Definitely a good addition to the nut-free chocolate collection, so thanks for the recommendation.
Please beware: I spoke with a rep at Hersheys today and they do not have a nut free facility and Sixlets are NOT made in a nut free facility!! (actually sixlets are produced in the same facility as Payday choc bar!)
Stay Safe!
When I called Hersheys they told me the regular sized bar was made in a separate room which is nut free. They even vent that room differently in order to keep nut fumes out of the room.
Heather,
Thanks for the tip on Kellie's Candies. I was meaning to check out the website a while ago and forgot. Have you tried their products? How about the popcorn in particular.

Craving chocolate right along with you! I'm nursing a 6 month-old & our PA child is 3 yrs. old.
I make a pan of brownies using the cocoa powder + butter recipe (I bump up the cocoa powder & decrease the flour slightly -- super fudgey). Then I wrap individual brownies in saran & into freezer bags & freeze. When I can't go on without my chocolate, I enjoy 1 (OK, 2 or 3) with a tall glass of ice cold milk. Then the following night I "enjoy" the night of 7 - 8 get-ups with a gas-filled baby.
Then I swear I will give up chocolate.
Someday, she will love (& tolerate) chocolate as I do.

After reading all of your very helpful responses to my queston I went on another surfing trip on the web. Here's another interesting article I found. Forgive me if someone else somewhere on this discussion board has already copied the link but here it is again. The article is discussing brand name chocolate companies and provides other links and more information about peanut/nut-free chocolates.
Hope you find it to be as informative as I did.

When you click on the link it will take you to the page that lists all of the articles, etc. that came up under the search topic.
click on the CHOCOLATE MANUFACTURERS--CANADA
link to take you to the article I am referring to.
After reading that article, you can go back to the previous page and find some more info. on peanut/nut-free chocolate factories.
Thanks again for pointing me in some helpful directions.

Hi Momomom,
Which country are you in?
I am not 100% sure as you will need to check the labels on the product, but last I heard the following are safe:
USA:
Regular size Hershey's bar, Hershey's kisses, Rolo, York Peppermint Pattie, Nestle Coffee Crisp (if available in your area), and I think I heard "Kit Kat bites" are safe? (but Kit Kats are not safe!) check the labels
Canada:
Nestle Aero, Coffee Crisp, Kit Kat, Smarties, Mirage, Hershey's kisses are all safe (but Hershey bar and Rolo are NOT SAFE!)
So in both countries you should be able to find some chocolates to nibble on. But always check the labels as manufacturing conditions do change, especially during seasonal periods.
