You might want to be absolutely, positively 100% sure that the teacher has a copy of the 504 plan.

When I was teaching, I knew about a situation where the teacher was never given a copy of the 504. Person A thought person B had to do this. Person B thought the nurse had to do this. The teacher never knew the 504 was in place because the meeting had taken place in the grade level prior--she was not in on the meeting.

So, sure enough, dd went to school today. Mind you, we have a new principal and a new teacher (we were told the week before school started about the new teacher). I told the teacher about dd's 504. She did not have a copy. Luckily, I had made an extra copy and handed one to her on the spot.

So make sure the teacher actually has a copy of the 504 if you have one!

I just wanted to warn you--all that work for 504 may not do a thing if the teacher doesn't have a copy!!!

Great point! Thanks for the info. BTW, how often to those things (504 plan's) get updated? Every new school year or as we deem necessary? I'm new to this and in the beginning stages of developing my first one for DS1. I could use all the info I can get.

Thanks again!

In our situation, it's yearly unless we have issues in the meantime. If there are issues to be addressed, we can reconvene during the school year if necessary (although, of course, they would like to avoid having meeting after meeting after meeting).

I think it's great if you can meet prior to your child actually entering school. I was able to convince dd's school to meet in June the year before she entered kindergarten. That way everything was in place before she started school in August.
