PEANUT ALLERGY ALERT
September 24, 2004
TO: Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network Members
FROM: The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network and Oscar Mayer Foods Corporation
RE: Oscar Mayer Lowfat Lunchables Ham & Swiss Cheese Lunch Combinations
Oscar Mayer Foods Corporation is recalling 3.4-oz. and 6.75-oz. Oscar Mayer
Lowfat Lunchables Ham & Swiss Cheese Lunch Combinations with the code date
of 15 NOV 2004 EB Est 537C because the package includes a Butterfinger Bar
made with peanuts instead of a Capri Sun Fruit Roll.
The company estimates that approximately 300 packages of the recalled
product may have the wrong item in the package. Although the carton
containing the Lunchables components is improperly labeled, the
Butterfinger Bar inside correctly includes peanuts in the list of
ingredients. While the mislabeled product has only been found in retail
stores in Minnesota, the company is issuing this national allergy alert and
recall notice as a precaution.
The products were initially distributed in Minnesota but may be found in
retail stores primarily in the Midwest. The mislabeled product contains
ham, American cheese, Capri Sun Fruit Punch and the Butterfinger Bar. The
correctly labeled product would normally contain ham, Swiss cheese, Capri
Sun Fruit Punch and Capri Sun Fruit Roll.
The company learned of the error when consumers in Minnesota reported
finding the Butterfinger Bars in the product that should contain Capri Sun
Fruit Rolls. The packaging error was limited in scope, and the company has
taken steps to prevent a recurrence. The company is cooperating fully with
the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Consumers who purchased the Oscar Mayer Lowfat Lunchables Ham & Swiss Lunch
Combinations with the 15 NOV 2004 EB Est 537C code date may return the
product to the store where purchased for a full refund.
Consumers with questions about the recall should call (866) 771-1511 or
