I tried to do a search, but my computer freezes up each time! I'm sure this subject has been brought up somewhere before, but I'm trying to find safe candy corn. The only kind I've been able to find so far is Brach's. It has "may contain" on the label. Is there any brand out here that is safe to eat? My PA son's Kindergarten teacher would like to do an activity with candy corn. I've been to Target, Walmart, Hannafords...so far all I find is Brach's.
Thanks!
I did a search for you and came up with this: http://www.peanutallergy.com/bbpage.htm
BlueberryHill brand is what it said I believe and you can buy it at K-mart. I didn't see a *Current* post so naturally you might want to call the company and check labeling.
Good Luck~Cindy

Ok....I gues I can't link back to Peanutallergy.com???? Anyways....the info said K-mart. Walmart's generic brand is NOT safe....Neither is Brach's...OR FArley's. So Blueberryhill would be your only hope unless you can make some??

The larger Stop N Shops in my area Blueberry Hill last year. They also carry Philly Swirl, so it may be time for me to head there again!

Thank you all for your quick replies! It's not practical for me to make candy corn, but I appreciate the recipe. It's for my son's Kindergarten class in school. If I can't find any, the teacher will have to do a different project.
I no longer have k-Mart by me
I'm hoping to find Blueberry Hill in my Stop and Shop! I haven't tried any of the drug stores that carry candy too. Need to also check out Rite Aid, Eckerds, and CVS.
Again, many thanks! So glad I have a brand name so start with, I'll start calling around!
Here's a link to Blueberry Hill:

Maybe you can contact them to find out where it's available in your area.
When I clicked on the Seasonal Candy link and got to candy corn, it looked like the package was called Bradford. Unfortunately I don't see any ingredient listings available (I'm still looking for milk, egg, peanut free candy corn).

the people at blueberry hill told me that they make the store brand of candy corn for target and walmart. BUT they couldn't say whether they were the ONLY company that makes it so some of the store brand might be made by someone else and may not be safe. We also do not have a kmart nearby and the faraway ones that I've checked at no longer carry blueberry hill around halloween so we've been going without candy corn. If anyone finds any blueberry hill maybe I can get someone to send us a few bags of it. I'm in Indiana, btw.

I contacted Bradford around Christmas time about spice drops. I believe I was told all their candy is nut free. It is all sugar and gummy types of product. I wish I could quote it better, but I came away feeling confident it was not in a shared facility. becca
Very interesting replies everyone has gotten from Blueberry Hill/Bradford. Here is my correspondence with them (I am also posting seperately so it won't be buried here):
Your company, and web-site, recently came to my attention via www.peanutallergy.com. There is a thread related to your candy corns that prompted me to visit your site.
I have a 4 year old daughter with a life-threatening peanut and tree nut allergy. Just a speck could kill her. We are extremely careful about the foods we give her and, as you can imagine, candies are usually off limits. Some people on peanutallergy.com suggested (last year) that your candy corns were peanut and tree-nut free. After looking at your website, I question whether they are and if any more of your candies are. I could not find anything that blatently had nuts or peanuts. The only exception was when I viewed the photo of the "Candy Mixin' Machine" it showed chocolate peanuts as an item. But I did not see them on your product list.
So, I guess my questions are:
1. Do you manufacture any items with peanuts and/or tree nuts? Peanut or nut oils?
2. If you do - are seperate lines used for other candies?
3. Are seperate facilities used?
4. Do you outsource any manufacturing to facilities that may manufacture with peanuts and tree nuts?
Thank you so much for your response. If your candies are safe for the peanut allergic community, I can assure you that I will get the word out and you can expect a booming business this Halloween from the millions of Americans with peanut allergies.
Thank you for your time,
Carolyn

Response:
Dear Ms. XXXXXX:
Thank you for your email.
Though we do not manufacture anything with peanuts (the candy mixin' machine chocolate peanuts, other packaged choc peanuts, and peanut bars are outsourced and never reach our factory but ARE in our warehouses); we also ask the same question you are asking of our raw material suppliers. The answer we receive is unfortunately usually quite consistent which goes along the lines of "We do not have any nuts in our facility but cannot guarantee our suppliers are 100% nut-free".
In today's business environment everyone plays it safe, there is little choice. I would recommend not taking any chance eating the products.
I know where you are coming and how difficult it is finding "safe" foods as my younger brother has the allergy as well, he has had a tough time with it like so many others. There have been some pretty scary moments when we were growing up, especially years ago when the hospitals were not so well versed as they are now regarding the allergy.
I am sorry to disappoint. It's really a shame there is no way for someone with the allergy to have a little "spot check" test kit or the like to test something on the spot.
Thank you again for your email.
Sincerely,
Mark Ducorsky

sheesh. Amazing how they like to change their story isn't it. Guess my kids are doomed to a life of never having candy corn.

Personally this is still within my comfort zone. I think it's pretty rare to find manufacturers who can truly vouch for all their suppliers.
Maybe a CYA thing?
Amy
tcperrine: When did you do this e-mail and how soon did you reply? I e-mailed them on the 19th, when I first heard of them here. I haven't gotten a reply as of yet, although I'm sure it's too soon anyway.
Going Nuts: I agree with you, I don't think anyone can truly give us a 100% guarantee, and I feel it's also CYA, by that statement.
I still can't locate any (not any other brand either). I swear Brach's has monopolized the market in my area. I live in Orange County, in NY. I only have a handful of stores left in my area to check out. I've learned though, calling these stores is a waste of time, and I give up! Usually it's some kid who probably doesn't even bother to check. So just call me the crazy mom going store to store on a mission trying to find candy corn! LOL
Thanks again for all your replies!

I emailed them the afternoon of Sept. 20, 2004 and received his reply at 1:38 pm on Sept. 21, 2004. That was the correspondece I originally posted. On Sept. 22nd I sent another note and have not heard from him. Honestly, I didn't expect a response, but looks like I have him ignoring everyone. Sorry. This is what I wrote:
Dear Mr. Ducorsky:
I appreciate your quick and honest reply. Of course, most companies are compelled to respond in the same manner, as you know. For obvious reasons, we have gone to making all of our bread, cakes, cookies, and most other foods at home. Then I emailed King Arthur Flour and was told not to consider their flours safe either. I can't even be 100% sure the food I make at home is safe either - unless I grow the wheat and grind it myself. When someone questioned whether or not we could assume bottled water safe - well, I knew I had to make my own educated-yet-realistic decisions.
So, if you are able, could you tell me one thing...would you let your brother eat the candy from Blueberry Hill?
Thank you for your time, and for your most understanding manner.
Carolyn XXXXXXX
That's an excellent reply-how sad that I actually questioned bottled water at one time. Please let us know if he replies and what he says.

Timmysmom, I know you aren't looking for a recipe but I hope you don't mind if I post this here - I inquired with Miss Robens if they knew of any safe candy corn and here is their reply

Any reply from Mr. Ducorsky as to whether he'd allow his brother to eat their candy corn?
Nope. Nothing. Guess I got my answer.
Well, I'm exhausted from running around trying to locate any, and I'm coming up empty. I've been EVERYWHERE...drug stores, chain stores, grocery stores, discount stores, gas stations...everyone sells Brach's and Brach's ONLY.
I've emailed Blueberry Hill TWICE and still no reply.

To those who feel that the Blueberry Hill candy corn is within their comfort zone and have a Christmas Tree Shop in their area (probably just in New England), I found the Blueberry Hill candy corn at the Christmas Tree Shop in Natick, MA this week.
It's so funny to look back at an old thread and see what a lunatic I was in trying to find candy corn!
If I only knew about Vermont Nut Free back then! (maybe wasn't around then? not sure)I got a new e-mail from Vermont Nut Free. They have a special on a 1 lb. bag of candy corn for $1.99. Haven't decided yet how many bags I'm buying (yes, BAGS!!)!
I got the carrot filled with candy corn this past Easter for my PA son and he loved them. First time he was ever able to have them! I snuck a few and they were really good!
I just got an email from Vermont Nut Free and their 16 oz bag of candy corn is on sale for $1.99 instead of the original price of $2.99. This might be a good time to stock up for the fall.
I believe Vermont Nut Free has candy corn.
Oops, sorry! Someone already said that! I read the first post thinking it was new and didn't notice the replies.
i bought some from vermont nut free not long ago. i swear it was the best candy corn i have ever had.
