Letter to send to other parents?? School Bus?

My PA son will be starting kindergarten in two weeks. I have already met with the school nurse and his teacher regarding his allergy, and the teacher has offered to tell the other parents that peanut snacks should not be brought in for birthdays or holiday parties. But I have seen other parents here mention letters that they sent to the other parents in the classroom and would like to mention that as a possiblity to my son's teacher. If anyone can provide me with a copy or example of a letter I would really appreciate it!

Also, what is your school district's policy regarding the school bus for your PA kids? Our district's bus drivers are not required to be trained in Epi-Pen use, but our school nurse will ask the driver if he/she is willing to be trained. I am inclined to let Andre ride the bus IF the driver has been trained. But if not, I will elect to drive him myself (the school is right around the corner). Just wondering what the norm is for school buses.

Thanks!

Andre's Mom, just did a quick search of the board and found this:-

May or may not be helpful, a more extensive search might help you.

As far as the school bus, hoping someone else will come in and provide you with some information. Thus far, my children haven't done the bus.

Best wishes!

Andre's Mom,

You will see some examples of letters that some parents send to others, but I'm of the opinion that in general, it's best for the letters to come from the school administration. They need to own the issue, and a great way of doing that from the beginning is to stand behind the policies by communicating them directly. Also, as you may have read in some other posts, there can be differing degrees of acceptance by parents of other kids affected by the policies. That's another reason why you want the communication to come from the school, so that negative reaction (if there is any) is more likely to be directed back at the school (rather than just at your family). Don't mean to be so negative, but you need to think about these possibilities.

Finally, all my research re:busing is that it often gets to be quite complicated, due to the contract with the district, the lack of mandate for drivers (often) to be trained, etc.

For K, we decided that we didn't want to bite off too many things the first year out of the gate. Wanted the school to focus on getting all the other basics correct, especially since their previous track record wasn't very good. Our feeling is that at some future year, we can layer on additional accommodations to deal with him having the option to take the bus (he's entering 1st grade now). Plus, once he is a little older, he will be more mature, more able to describe whether he's having a reaction (were it to occur), and possibly be carrying his own Epi-Pen on his person.

In my opinion you would be better off with a special-needs bus as they seat fewer students. The bus drivers are more attuned to the allergies. Durham School Services and Laidlaw provide such services. I would hate sending a kid on a large bus. But on the other hand the rules on the bus are no food and drink etc. But on a large bus this rule is hard to enforce even with a bus monitor onboard. Your choice for bus transport should fit the situation. Good luck.
