Danielle, thank you for contacting us. We are delighted to be able to
inform you that, at this time, to the very best of our knowledge, all of our
confections are gluten free. We do not use wheat, barley, rye, oats,
triticale, spelt or any of their components and that includes our dusting on
our conveyor belts. We do use corn and soy products in the manufacturing of
our products. Our products are also peanut, tree-nut and nut product free.
Only Charleston Chews contain egg product.

Well their response eliminates almost everything except sugar! Heaven forbid we should become SA.

I emailed the Tootsie Roll company and got a similar response. I was happy. But now I am confused. DH and I were in a craft store last night (Joann, etc), and while we were standing at the register, we noticed that they had Charms blow pops with Tootsie rolls and other Tootsie Roll/Charms products.

The labels said they were packaged by a company called Starlite (or something like that)in Zanesville, OH. What alarmed me was that there were also chocolate covered peanuts and other products there that were also packaged by the same company.

Now I am totally confused.

Maybe they were repacked into generic pakcs from bulk? becca (as opposed to the brand packing).

I have also seen packages of Tootsie Rolls and other candies, but by other companies. I always assumed that they simply repackage the products. But most of them carry peanut products, so I don't buy those, since they are probably packaged on the same equipment.

We only buy Tootsie in the manufacturers original packaging - that way you can be sure there is no cross contamination.

I wrote back to them, and here is their response:

our products are totally nut and nut product free. Apparently what
you are referring to is an assortment that is packaged by a re-bagger. They
purchase our products and them re-bag them under their own label. As they
handle products from many different companies, some of which may produce
peanut products, they must use the peanut disclaimer on their labels. We
hope this helps.

Does anyone have a phone # for tootsie roll or charms? I am trying to check out a new charms item and have not received a response to my emails...
