Has anyone been to any of the kids attractions in NH like Storyland, Santa's Village and Clark's Trained Bears this summer?
Eating out is always a concern for our PA child both in and out of the parks. We usually pack our own food but I would like to try eating out some of the time this year. Any comments would be appreciated.

We've gone to Storyland several times, and found it to be okay as far as my son's PA goes. At least one of the restaurants in the park does serve PB&Js, but I called to ask, and the sandwiches are prepared elsewhere and wrapped, so there isn't too much of a chance of cross contamination by the servers.

They seemed allergy-aware when I called, and told me they don't use peanut oil anywhere in the park. That was a couple of years ago, so it wouldn't hurt to call again.

For desserts, we wouldn't eat any of their baked goods (we just never do, feeling the risk is too high for us), but we have eaten their soft serve ice cream, the shaved ice (like a snow cone) and their popcorn with no trouble.

The biggest problem we had was finding a restaurant for dinner after we finished at the park. Sometimes traffic in the North Conway area is so bad that you can't get into town to get to a restaurant unless you're willing to sit in traffic for a *very* long time. Once we ended up finally getting into a restaurant only to find that they cooked in peanut oil.

To avoid both the North Conway traffic and peanut oil, we had luck heading the other direction (toward Bartlet) to a place called the Red Parka Pub. They seemed allergy aware, don't use peanut oil, and have a sign posted warning you that they do serve peanuts in the bar downstairs. If the traffic into North Conway isn't too bad, you could try the other place we had luck at, called something like the ?Muddy? Moose. It was newish, with a woodsy, rustic decor and antler chandeliers They had oreos for the kids' dessert.

And if you're a fan of the tv show the West Wing, check out the name of the elementary school in Bartlett and see how Martin Sheen's character must have gotten his name.

If you have any other questions about Storyland, I'll be glad to take a stab at them.

We just came back from Conway New Hampshire. We rented a house on Conway Lake, it was wonderful. We went to Storyland, they are very allergy aware. They have a list of all the foods they serve and it lists all the major allergies. My son who is allergic to peanuts and eggs ate the grilled cheese sandwich with fries and had no problem.

Thanks Debbie and Carsons Mom for taking the time to reply..
Your posts were helpful. It got me thinking that I should contact each attraction and ask them about the food they serve. Hopefully, they will know that they need to stay food allergy aware and treat it seriously.
I haven't eaten at the Red Parka in years..We'll have to check it out.
Thanks again!

We've visited Storyland (3 times), Santa's Village, North Conway Railroad, Clark's Trading Post, and Six Gun City in NH.
We loved all except Six Gun City -nothing to do with the allergy -we just felt that when we spend a fortune to get into a place we shouldn't be done in an hour.

Storyland was great- clean, nice staff, and when we were there they could show us ingredient listings at the different stands. I was concerned that the listings could be out of date but I appreciated the effort. We stuck to hot dogs and pizza and drinks. We didn't eat at the place where they sold PB&J sandwiches.

Santa's Village was also nice. We've only been there once-I asked about the pizza early before there were lines and that's what we went with there.

The last time we were up there we stayed at the Cabot Motor Lodge. They had a restaurant on site where we ate breakfast and dinner. We had the manager check our son's order with the chef to find out if it was safe for him before ordering. We had no problems- our son likes plain meat, veg, and potatoes.

Other than that we stuck to the old standbys unfortunately-McD's, Wendy's, and Pizza Hut. Checking with the manager at each one as to what oils are used etc.

Hope you have a great and RELAXING time- what a vacation is supposed to be!!

In sharp contrast to the rotten response I got from Conway Scenic Railroad, Storyland sent me this very nice response:

Good Afternoon Heather

We have been to both Storyland and Santas Village and had a great time with our PA son and had no reactions. Frankly I always pack my own snacks everywhere I go just because it makes me feel better and less stressed but I did not see anything at either park that I wouldnt have given to my son. Have a great time ...both parks are alot of fun!!!

I'm raising this thread in case anyone has any updates to add. We are planning our trip to Conway this summer and I wonder if anyone has found an eatery s/he is happy with.

Also looking for updates from anyone about safe restaurants (DS is anaphylactic to peanuts and tree nuts) in the North Conway area.

Any good leads would be appreciated

We're planning a trip up that way (our destination is Storyland, rather than North Conway itself) in a couple of weeks. We'll be staying at a new hotel, the Eagle Mountain House in Jackson. I'll let you know when we return if their restaurant is manageable for people with nut allergies.

Hi Debbie - We stayed at the Eagle Mountain House about 5 years ago when we visited Storyland. I think it's the same hotel - although it's not new? We had a very nice time - the staff was accomodating and generous. I remember that my PA/TNA son ate in the main restaurant without problems. I'd be curious to know how your trip goes - and if it is actually the same place. Storyland's a lot of fun.

Debbie,
Thanks. It may be, though, that we'll be in that neck of the woods about the same time as you (late June/early July)...

Sorry, I wasn't clear in what I wrote at all! I didn't mean that the hotel was new. I meant that it's a new place for us, "new" as in different from the place we usually stayed.

That's great to hear! And I'm sure it's the same place. Thanks for the information.

Storyland is now carrying Rebecca's Nut-Free cookies and brownies (see peanut-free businesses). When I called them to see if they were interested in distributing the baked goods, they were thrilled to have the option. They are very allergy aware and have been great to work with.

Thanks for the info. We're heading up there for a few days in August with grandma. My 12 yr. old (PA/TNA) isn't exactly thrilled. Knowing another treat he can have is wonderful. This will be my 3yr. olds first time to Storyland-not sure if it will beat Disney in her mind but we're looking forward to another stay in North Conway.

Chris, I just told my PA son about this and he is so excited. We're going to Storyland this weekend, and he just said, "It's my dream come true!" Thank you for letting us know. We'll be looking for your cookies and brownies while we're there!

P.S. I'd still love to see your products at Sudbury Farms or Shaw's, if you have the chance to contact them.

Storyland serves Cool Dogs (ice cream that looks like a hot dog) which are safe, too.
