I noticed on the allergen pages for these, there is a red star in the peanut and tree nut column and it just says Peanuts and tree nuts are not used in XXX restaurants, but may be used in common manufacturing plants. It doesn't specify which products may be from shared plants. Has this always been there? We're trying to determine which places are the safest to eat for our vacation (about 3 day's driving to get to our destination, plus of course 3 days to get home). I was thinking that it was this way before but was just wondering. We've only eaten at KFC out of all of these, btw, but sometimes you'll see a combination restaurant. The other day we were travelling and saw a restaurant with Taco Bell, LJS and Pizza Hut all in the same store.

Thanks-I thought it was there before. It looks like maybe shared facilities (possibly) but not shared lines (or else it would have the star on each individual item). The closest KFC to us doesn't have the cookies but when we're travelling I'll be sure to ask. I don't think anything from taco bell, at least nothing dd would order, goes in the ovens anyway. She does like KFC biscuits though.

But you eat hamburgers w/ buns from fast food right? I seem to remember a post about Wendy's? Then again I'm not completely comfortable with Wendy's because of the peanut stuff even though it is in sealed pkgs. Those pkgs can break in the box they're shipped in-that's what always comes to mind for me.

So are people comfortable eating there then? What's the difference between being okay with eating at these places, but then not Pizza Hut? Isn't it kind of the same situation?

Pizza hut's allergen page has the black dots on some items, which shows that those items are made on shared equipment, not just a shared facility. The ones at KFC, LJS and A&W show only the red stars which indicate shared facilities (blanket statement).

What do chocolate chip cookies have to do with the chicken? Are they peanut butter cookies? The same statement has been on the taco bell site and we still go about once a week. We have not had a problem to date and it is still the same warning as the KFC one. We have stopped eating pizza hut since I had someone investigate it for me. We do not have A&W or long john silvers near me, but I don't think those sound good anyways. Have you asked if they use the same pan for the cookies as the biscuits? We do trust fast food places b/c the food doesn't just sit there and it is always moving. My husband is deployed right now so it has become a lunch often. Not the healthiest but you do what you have to.
When I looked last night, the red star (indicating possible shared facilities) was only on the LJS, KFC and A&W pages. There was no indication of peanut/tree nut anywhere on Taco Bell's page other than the choco taco (which I don't think ours even sells anymore). Pizza Hut actually has peanut and tree nut as a may contain (shared equipment) on several of their items including red sauce, white sauce, red pepper (wth??).
AFA the cookies, MommyMegan posted a while back (I think it was her) that some KFC have choc chip cookies that are baked in the same ovens w/ the biscuits and other baked KFC stuff, but I don't know if the cookies are a 'may contain' item. It seems like most fast food cookies are 'may contain' so I think MommyMegan is worried about cross contaminated cookies coming in contact with the biscuits or other baked KFC items. I would be worried too so I'll ask at any KFC to make sure before we eat there.

Your right! I did post about that about a month ago.
I actually don't even eat Wendys anymore. I couldn't get a truthful (or polite for that matter) answer out of them, so I said forget it..stinks for me but oh well, I'll get over it lol.

I always check the KFC website (I refuse to eat there anymore sine they bake the chocolate chip cookies there now, too much X-Contamination issues to deal with!) and that little red star has always been there. I guess basically it means, some of their products may come from a plant that has the common allergens IN the plant, but I guess no where is completely 100% safe, unless it's stated peanut/tree nut free.
I really think this is an awesome article on the peanut allergy. No matter where you go in a restaurant if they serve anything with peanuts there is a very good possibility that your food has come in contact with them sometime or another. I have bookmarked this site for future reads.

This is a good read, thanks. Some of the content seems old though so how much is still relavant? Has the labelling improved? I'm posting from the UK so not up to date with US restaurant labelling but need to familiarise myself.
