I know this has been posted on before, but it has been a year or more since the last post I could find.

My PA son has been asking for Jelly Belly Jelly Beans. I know they make a peanut butter flavor, but I wanted to find out if they ran dedicated lines or did any sanitizing between runs, etc.

I emailed the company. Their response below:

Dear Ben,

We use peanut-based ingredients in our Peanut Butter flavored Jelly Belly jelly beans. It's one of our most popular flavors.

We know peanut allergies are a serious problem for some people who have to watch what they eat, so we clearly list Peanut Butter and Peanut Flour in our ingredient statements that can be found on the packages or bulk bin labels. We sell this flavor in bulk in our 20 Assorted Flavors mix and in our 49 Assorted Flavors mix.

None of the other flavors contain peanuts (or any other nuts) as an ingredient.

We feel it is important that you be aware that we produce all our Jelly Belly flavors on the same equipment. This means that it is possible for peanut oils or other peanut products to be transferred to any of our other candies. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that all flavors are 100% free of peanut products. To be safe, we regret that we must recommend that you avoid all of our products.

Hope this is helpful.

Sweet Regards,

Mr. Jelly Belly

Chairman of the bean - too cute.

As an added note, Jelly Belly also produced the Harry Potter Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans that were being sold quite a bit last year during the movie hype. Those were also marked as containing peanuts (flour I think).

Just a thought: I know that the Just Born Company (they manufacture marshmallow Peeps and a few other products) produces an item called Teenee Beanee

I'm told that the Jolly Rancher Jelly beans are safe. Jason eats them with no problems.

They're not much bigger than Jelly Bellys and actually taste better.

Additional note:

Yes, Jolly Ranchers are the way to go. Previous posts on this board from a year or so ago mentioned that the Starburst Jelly Beans (also intensely flavored) were NOT safe (due to shared equipment), but that Jolly Rancher Jelly Beans ARE safe. They had complained that Jolly Rancher Jelly Beans were only seasonal, but I found some in late summer.

I hadn't realized that Jolly Rancher was a Hershey's brand, but they are made by Hershey's. I trust their labeling, so I felt comfortable buying them for my PA son.

I was just searching for where I might find Teenie Beanie jelly beans and found this warning at this site. Seems to conflict with Just Born info saying they are a nut free company. Maybe they contract out their jelly beans? becca

That website says the jellybeans are bulk, so I would guess they buy them by the huge bag or box and put them into their own bins, which could have contained nuts in the past. Either that or they buy them in the huge amounts then repackage them for resale using their nut-contaminated equipment. I might email justborn to verify. My kids don't eat jelly beans but I like them and I'd rather have something that won't hurt my dd if she happens to get hold of one.

Teanee Beanee are available at Long's Drugs on the West Coast. Not at every Long's. They come in a small stand up bag with fruit design. Several flavor assortments. I have also seen them at Safeway's seasonally (Easter, Xmas, etc.). These are not packaged by "Sweetshoppe", but by Just Born who is the manufacturer.

My take on this is that SweetShoppe buys in bulk and doesn't take precautions, so has disclaimer on it's web site. I would buy them somewhere else packaged and not patronize that web site vendor.

Thanks for the info. Just made me nervous. I am on the East coast and have heard of them, but do not see them. I have been scouring the candy isles all over today, in fact, looking for Tootsie midgies, so was looking for the TB's just for fun! Funny, everyone is out of Tootsie rolls(where they are on sale, anyway)! becca

I have been giving my daughter the fruit bowl flavors of Jelly Belly's or the little sample packs. Most of the assorted bags do have peanut flour listed...that is why we were just buying the above.
The peanut JB's and all other flavors are made on the same lines and i was told there is a risk of cross contamination.

We have had no problem until last night. My daughter had a severe reaction and we had to use the epi pen. So we are no longer giving her the jelly beans.
She had been eating them for so long that I figured their cleaning process was excellent since she has had no problem in the past with them.

I would recommend not giving them to your son.

Hi, I contacted Just Born, Inc. yesterday regarding thier Teenie Beenie Jelly Beans. I live in Ohio, and the only store they sell them at around here is Rite Aid Drug Store. She told me that they could be ordered on-line at www.candydiscounters.com I did go to the site and they have them but you would have to purchase in bulk. I think it was about 37 or 38 dollars a case before shipping. Just an alternative in case you can't find them in your area. THANKS.

The Jolly Rancher Jelly Beans I looked at a couple weeks ago had a peanut warning on them--same equipment I believe.
