Is there any nail polish you avoid?

My kids saw an idea for decorating nails in Family Fun and are now nagging me endlessly to do their nails. The idea they saw is red white and blue, and I have none of those colors. What's more, I don't know who would have those colors. Can I use acrylic paint and put a coat of clear over it? Or is there a 'safe' nail polish brand that would have weird colors like that (I know red isn't weird but the others are).

Believe it or not most of the common brands (maybelline, cover girl, etc) do have the unusual colors now- saw blue I know and have seen white/or at least pearly white too at stores. Unfortunately I don't know which brands are safe as I haven't let DD have it yet, but I'll be interested to see if anyone can post some safe ones- as I'd love to let her wear some.

No advice on which nail polish, but my DD saw that article and we happen to have those colors. She took a picture on her phone and wants to do her toenails for the 4th!

I think this was it:

(edited), I follow those steps when polishing...too many strokes and the polish isn't shiny!
I also use a product as a top coat called "Out The Door". I've purchased it at CVS drugstore. Awesome stuff...it gives nails a great head start to drying.

I never did find any of the blue or white nail polish. I don't have many sources here though. Only JCP and Regis for OPI and I checked walmart and cvs and no one had a good selection. My younger dd was really mad at me but what can I do when I can't find the stuff??

When I got out of HS I took a one year manicuring and pedicuring class at the local community college. I think I've forgotten most of it though. There was a lot more technical stuff (learning about bones, diseases, etc) than I thought there would be.
