Introducing solids to sibling of PA daughter

My daughter is 6 months old and was exclusively breastfed till 1 week ago, now I'm weaning her and trying out rice cereal. i'm trying desperately hard not to be paraparanoid, but everytime she coughs while eating, or gets a little rash, well you all know what I think. It took me a month to gear up and try another formula as she had a bad reaction to Carnation Goodstart and we had a trip to the hospital. This leads me to believe that she has a milk based allergy.
My question is should I keep trying the cereal, switch cereals or just move onto vegetables? Does anyone else assume that if their baby doesn't like something they might have an allergy to that food? I'm already keeping her peanut, milk, egg and fish free for a few years. But I'm so paranoid because of my first child. Thank you for listening.

I am going through the same thing! I have a PA 3 yr old, and a 1 yr old who i don't think is PA. (I used Carnation Good Start for both my kids and they were fine). Anyway, i was nervous to give my second child solids, but I have been very successful. We have a nut free home. I have not given him peas because my PA child reacted and since they are legumes like peanuts, i am afraid. I also think that since I am so cautious and afraid, i have caused my 3 yr old to become a very picky eater and he will not try new foods. It is very difficult! Mamabear..what does your pediatrician say about this. Mine told me that my baby would have to be exposed to peanut product in order for it to show up on any blood test. Let me know, Thanks

Mamabear,
I really want to encourage you to keep breastfeeding if possible. It really is the best thing for a potentially allergic baby. And make sure you avoid the potential allergens as well as long as you are nursing her.

I took solids really slow with my daughter, even before I knew that she had major allergy problems. And also, yes, I would really pay attention to how she likes the food. Patricia refused yogurt and cottage cheese (this was all around 10 months or so) and scrambled egg yolk. And it turned out that she was allergic to milk and egg.

Have you tried oatmeal? Patricia didn't like the taste of the rice cereal (she ate it, but not very enthusiastically), but she liked the oatmeal. I think that babies instinctively dislike foods that they are allergic to.

I don't think you are being paranoid. You are being a good mom!

hello, have you tried the leche league, their book the motherly art of breastfeeding has a good chapter on introduceing solids and avoiding allergies. although l would recomend continuing breastfeeding if you have taken steps to stop , you have done it for a good reason, do whats best for you.
l followed the adivce of this book , and found it helpful. as a positive note l have four children and only one has multiple allergies.
in my opinion the leche league is the best thing that has come out of U.S.A

good luck , the sun is trying to peep from a cloud ...oh nice 3 seconds of sun , well its better than the rain....williamsmummy in the uk.

Have you seen this page:

It has a sequence of foods for allergic infants and I'm sure it could be used to apply to potentially allergic ones as well. It's taken from a book on dietary management of food allergies.

Triciasmom and William's Mummy
Thank you for the support, I would continue nursing but have to return to work in two weeks and am unable to pump at work, and work shifts, which makes it difficult. I think I'll try oatmeal because the poor thing is so constipated.

SF
The allergist said that due to her skin (eczema) to avoid allergens for me and her and that testing was futile until exposure.

Blackmoss
That list was great! Thanx
