Has anyone had this problem? I'm 43 and have been diagnosed with PA for 10+ yrs. My last reaction was because someone in my office was eating a handful of peanuts. My first symptom lately is very flu-like. Then I get very shaky, my throat begins to close and my heart is racing. So far I've been fortunate and Benadryl has been able to take care of it. I used to recognize the smell early enough to run out of harms way until this last reaction. Now I notice that my DH or DDs will notice it first. So far I've been fortunate and not had any reactions. I notice, though, that sometimes I can't even go into grocery stores that have open bins of peanuts, but other times it won't bother me?? Someone once mentioned that it has a lot to do with the mold between the nut and the shell so I'm wondering if the freshness of the peanuts has anything to do with it. I haven't been to a baseball game in the last 8 yrs because I had to leave the last one when my voice started changing because my throat had closed so quickly. I haven't been nauseous other than flu-like. The only hives I have gotten have been from contact. My husband and I would like to start traveling and I'm nervous about flying. I did have a mild reaction from a school bus field trip when a teacher gave out "PB cracker treats" for all the kids. Anyone else have flu-like symptoms?
Hi! I am PA with a history of anaphylactic reactions and also airborne and contact allergic. I too have inconsistent reactions. The students at my school eat peanuts for a snack occasionally, sometimes I have a mild reaction (it's only anaphylactic if I eat them; I get tight chest from breathing them, and itchy if I touch them) and other times I have one eye swell up. I just wish we could just ban them from the classes I work in, but I don't think it's going to happen.
This is the scariest part of the allergy, b/c I never know if I will be really sick or not!

I had a reaction to a desensitization shot a few weeks ago (for pollen)...and it was really flu-like. Chills, achy, dizzy, unable to focus, nauseated, my ears were plugged, and my chest felt a little heavy when I layed down. It came on about 5 minutes after the shot and lasted the rest of the evening. THEN the other day I ate a granola bar (I'm TN allergic) and saw the may contain lable about peanuts, but not the almonds. I had the exact same reaction about an hour or so later, but not quite as severe. This one lasted until about 1/2 hour after I took an antihistimine.
