4 year old Alex Baptist , Australia:

an excerpt from the newspaper story above:

At age two, Alex Baptist was diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to peanuts. At age four, while attending a supposedly peanut-free kindergarten, Alex died of a suspected allergic reaction to peanuts.

His grief-stricken parents Nigel and Martha Baptist said as far as they were aware, all Alex ate was fruit.

"We suspect that there might have been some incidental contamination with peanut that day," Nigel said. "And we're hoping for an inquest, so we might be able to get more answers as to what happened that day."

"Hopefully if we find out what answers there are, we can learn from it and possibly prevent such things from happening again."

The Baptists only know that Alex probably died from anaphylaxis, which is triggered by severe allergy, which causes the airways to swell and block.

The couple has collected more than 4,000 signatures on a petition calling for an inquest into Alex's death. They want to know exactly what happened and why his life-saving dose of adrenaline was not administered.

Thank you for posting that story. It's gripping, and I am haunted by it. The reforms that were stated in the article are inspiring and hopeful.

The photo of Alex Baptist's gravestone shows that he died September 15, 2004.

Does anyone know how to cut and paste his dear photo here?

Edited to add: Never mind. I see now that Jana already listed Alex (and included his photo) in her second post. Sorry.

Thank you for adding it Jana - and thank you to Nathan's family for providing it.

Amber Norman 12 yrs
died after eating a sweet containing nuts by mistake.
Amber had a nut allergy, put the chocolate brazil in her mouth during an after-school homework class, thinking it was a strawberry cream.
Her lips immediately began to swell and she felt unwell, an inquest heard today.
Amber was taken home from Alderman Quilley school in Eastleigh , Hants UK , but she quickly deteriorated and within an hour of eating the sweet her heart stopped.
She was taken to southampton General Hospital where medics eventually managed to revive her. But she had suffered severe brain damage and died five days later , on jan 17
Southampton coroners court heard that although Amber was known to have a nut allergy, she could eat some types, including peanuts, and had never before had a significant reaction.
Amber's mother, Sandra, 42, urged sweet manufacturers to label wrappers of individual sweets with a large N if they contain nuts.
'to lose a child so young under such bizarre circumstances is heartbreaking' said Mrs Norman, who has two younger children.
Coroner keith Wiseman recorded a verdict that death was due to an allergic reaction to the nut in the sweet.

It has taken me more than six years after the death of my husband Howard Intrator to finally visit your site. I would like to clarify that although Howard was deathly allergic to peanuts, the circumstances surrounding his death were not consistent with a peanut allergy. Everyone rushed to that conclusion. The coroner ruled his death, as complications arising from a bee sting, although my daughter's allergist tells me it could have also been deerfly bites. In other words, nobody knows what exactly caused his anaphylactic reaction. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but it is true, I injected Howard with both his Epipen and my 3-year-old daughter's Epipen Jr. The ambulance attendants also injected him with an Epipen. My daughter's allergist told me we probably waited too long (5 minutes or so). I guess the lesson to be learned from all of this is to inject right away, never hesitate, and never feel like you are over-reacting.

LisaS: thanks for the insect bite info. my only memories from childhood with the deerfly are of my face suddenly swelling...lips, eyes, everything and my dad rushing me back to the cabin (by boat....we were on the river) for benadryl. i recall the swelling lasting for hours. no one apparently ever thought enough about it to allergy test me (but, then again, if what your allergist says is true, maybe it wouldn't have helped anyhow). craziest thing.....my dad is a doctor. you would think he would have become more alarmed than he did. ?????

we (my kids and i) are on our way to the river this weekend (same river, same cabin and probably same deerflies as all those years ago too.) now that i have two PA girls, i at least always have benadryl and epinephrin on hand.

again, lisa, so sorry for you and your family. i'm not sure how people get through things like this. i can't imagine losing one of my girls to something as senseless as an allergic reaction, though it is always in the back of my mind that it could happen. (and your family's story is proof that it DOES happen). i hope the days get easier for you and your family.
