If Avoiding Tree Nuts, Do You Avoid Artificial Flavouring As Well?

This question actually stems from a discussion re Dare cookies.

If you are avoiding tree nuts or have a TNA in your household, do you avoid artificial flavouring of tree nuts, like artificial almond flavouring, as well?

I do. Can't really explain why except I do.

Best wishes!

Me too! Anything with the word nuts gives me the creeps. No WAY would I use something that actually tasted like nuts! My husband brought home Grape-Nuts and I almost kick him AND the box right out the front door. I bought some Lundberg wild rice blend and I was floored by how "nutty" it tasted. Not sure if I will serve that particular blend again.

It's an emotional thing - not a logical thing.

Carolyn, I loved how you explained it! It's an emotional thing not a logical thing. Right on!

There are many instances where I may be considered extreme, especially because my son is not TNA (PA only), but for me, again, because we are avoiding tree nuts, our home is peanut and tree nut free.

I remember a couple of years ago I was working at an antique warehouse on a Saturday and the kids were with their Father garage sale-ing. My friend and owner of the shop had bought a baked good at a garage sale on the way into the store and it was something quite luscious but it had walnuts in it. It would have been luscious without walnuts. Anyway, I had one square of it and then I went and scrubbed as though I had eaten a peanut product.

I also knew that my children stopped by with their Father during the day and I scrubbed down the table where I had eaten the square.

They were luscious, but again, the squares (and I forget what they were but they were very buttery) would have been luscious without the walnuts.

I do, from time to time, miss sunflower seeds (haven't found any not labeled "may contain") and I do miss a couple of tree nuts, but I just don't do them.

The only flavouring I usually have in the house is vanilla for baking (rare occasion that is that it happens from scratch ) and I can't even remember when or why in my life I would have bought almond flavouring, but I do remember doing so, but no, not now.

I just love how you put it!

Best wishes!

One idea is to plant some sunflowers in the yard.. then you can have safe sunflower seeds (unless the birds get to them before you do! )

I've thought of doing this myself! We are in Florida, so we have the "sun" part at least. LOL!

Erik, correct me if I am wrong, but aren't you in Canada? Can you actually grow sunflowers there?!?! I thought the ground was one mass of ice from September to June. Ha,ha, just kidding! From someone who grew up in this heat and humidity, even 50 degrees sounds like the North Pole!

You've inspired me...DD would love to plant sunflowers this weekend!

Hi Carolyn,

Yes, we can grow sunflowers here. My mother often grows them. It is cold here for many months, but I am glad to say it is warm enough for sunflowers.

Erik - I hope you know I was trying to be funny. I didn't really think Canada was frozen over. Ahhh...you guys have the best of everything up there, eh? I'm jealous!

Cindy, I started substituting vanilla for almond extract in recipes, before I knew that almond extract is actually "safe". I am still most comfortable doing that when I bake at home, since I haven't noticed any difference in the outcome.

Sunflower seeds are considered nuts because they come in a shell. I found that out the hard way when my son (+ 3 tree nut allergy and a peanut allergy) ate 4 sunflower seeds and his throat started to close over. Some people with nut allergies are also allergic to "shell" fish
