I swear sunscreen causing eczema; anyone try Aveeno Sunscreen?

I managed to clear up my dd's eczema from the winter for a while. The first day I put sunscreen on her, she got eczema on the inside of her elbows (I used Hawaiian Tropic). I read the ingredients, and it didn't list anything questionable. Has anyone tried the new Aveeno?

Yes, we've tried the new Aveeno -- SPF 30 & 45 lotions and the 30 Spray. I LOVED the lotions for my face -- worked great, no stinging in eyes, no reaction for me. Kids did fine with the lotions on face & body.

HOWEVER -- hated the spray. Horrible, heavy fragrance. Son (PA/TNA) also developed mystery skin/excema reaction and the only "new" thing we can come up with in his world is the Aveeno spray. . .

I would try the lotion in limited amounts for starters. But I have to say I LOVE it & I've had a devil of a time finding sunscreens for me -- I'm not FA, but have severe chem sensitivities & allergies.

Sorry for typos, tired.

My dd had eczema that was mostly related to pa, but summer wreaked havoc on her skin as well. I started using some sunscreen that is titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Basically, it sits on top of the skin and reflects the sun instead of using chemicals. I have to rub it in for about 2 days, but it works well and she doesn't break out at all. I can't think of the name, but it has Austrailian in it. They make it for "baby" or "sensitive" skin.

Hope that helps you!
Patty

We have this problem too. My DS starts breaking out each summer the minute we start using sunscreen. And that is after clear skin in the winter the last couple years.

So far we've only had luck with Neutrogena Sensitive Skin sunscreen. I also heard good things about Aveeno and want to try that. We tried Blue Lizard (the Australian one - is that the one the previous poster is talking about? It says sensitive skin...I'm not ruling it out YET because I heard good things and we only tried it a couple times) but he broke out from that too.

Note with the Neutrogena, it's not waterproof so doesn't stay on great w/ swimming and we have to reapply. It's SPF30.

Have you tried Water Babies? I'm 23 and that's still what I use. I'm allergic to an ingredient in normal sunscreens. I used to get hives just from sitting on a vinyl seat, and this never gave me trouble.

One thing though - don't buy the generic store brand type. For year after year, I would buy a new bottle of the generic and me and my dad would go to the NASCAR race and I'd come back burnt to a crisp. I thought it was because I was sweating off the sunscreen, but I was putting it on every half hour! Last year, I bought the water babies brand name, and the only place I burned was where I missed with the sunscreen (never forget the sides of your knees). So in this case, buying brand name does matter.

We use Neutrogena and Ombrelle sunblock, and have never had any problems

I belong to another group that deals with eczema related issues and one sunscreen always comes up as not causing issues - California Baby Sunscreen. I believe you have to order it on the web but I have heard great things about all of their products!

Right on the California Baby Sunscreen (and shampoo and conditioner) it says Peanut free (or Nut free -can't remember and also other things "free"). We buy ours at a farmers market type of store (Henry's, Sprouts, Whole foods, Wild Oats etc). It think the sunscreen works great and it doesn't have any of the bad chemicals in it.

We use coppertone sport. We've used the lotion, spray, aerosol and face stick, all with no problems and no sunburns. I love the aerosol but it's expensive and the bottle doesn't seem to last very long.

I have yet to find a sunscreen that does not cause eczema on my DD's skin.

The best we have found is to use Baby Blanket sunscreen and not to leave it on all day. With the exception of being out all day such as the beach, we do a quick wash off at lunch and reapply (we would have to anyway) later in the day when she goes back out. I often give her a bath before dinner to get the rest off and let her skin "breath".

This has made a big difference, however she will still get a patch or two especially when it is very hot.

We use the Neutrogenia free and sensitive, it has no scents or colors and it works great. DS has not had a problem with it so far and he gets exzema from almost everything he touches.

Wow, thanks for the recommendations. I think you guys are right in that we need to get a "physical" sunscreen (i.e., titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) as opposed to a "chemical" suncreen (avobenzone). A few of the brands mentioned we've tried (the Neutrogena Sensitive, but it's not "waterproof") and it didn't seem to cause a problem. But that was years ago. Drugstore.com has Blue Lizard, Fallene COTZ and California Baby. I think I'll order one of these. I haven't seen any of these brands in local stores. ETA: I'll try the Aveeno too, and I need a SS for myself anyway!

I see that your DD has a coconut allergy. Mine reacted to coconut during scratch test and avoidance is making me crazy! Any tips??? I'm having trouble finding something to bathe her with...found a shampoo but no soaps/bath gels. Took a lot of work to find a sunscreen without any coconut derivatives but the Lily of the Desert is working great for us! How old is your DD??

the neutrogena isn't waterproof -- but we are in arizona and use it constantly in and out of the pool and never have any problems with coverage. i do reapply here and there, but i find it to be the best sunscreen (for eczema and for blockage) for our entire family.

We use Rocky Mountain Sunscreen at the summer science camp for the specific reasons below:

http://www.rmsunscreen.com/

"Rocky Mountain Sunscreen is greaseless, waterproof, PABA and fragrance free, and hypoallergenic. The bonding base formula works by interlocking with the skin. It is especially effective for the active user because it won't clog the pores and will allow the skin to breathe and sweat."

Hello (edited)!

My DD is 6 and yes, I do have a recommendation for soap. Kiss My Face bar soaps are olive oil based. Works great and I use it on all three kids with no problems. Just be sure to use a soap dish that holds the bar of soap up so it can dry or you will get a soggy mess!

The website is: http://www.kissmyface.com

Coconut seems to show up in the strangest places and getting info from manufacturers on it can be difficult.
