hidden milk in recipe

Not sure exactly where to put this, but I saw a recipe for tomato salad that called for soaking the onions in milk before adding to the salad. Supposedly makes the onions more mild tasting. We don't have a milk allergy in the family, but I thought wow, never would have expected to find that in a salad recipe.

Unbelievable! My son has multiple allergies so he only eats food that I prepare. Just reminds you of how careful you have to be.

Yikes!! My ds is allergic to milk. I NEVER would have thought a plain garden salad unsafe for him. Thanks for the tip!

It is also common to soak fish in milk to knock back the fishy flavor.

There is also a restaurant (not a chain) that fries their baked potatoes in peanut oil for a few seconds to crisp the outside skin after baking. It is a scary world for those with allergies!!

There are actually many foods that can be soaked in milk. I remember years ago seeing a recipe for baked chicken that called for soaking it in milk first to keep it juicy. I just saw a minute of Molto Mario as I was turning on the computer just now, calling for soaking anchovies in milk. Milk removes any strong flavors from foods, as well as improving the texture of certain foods.

I think liver is soaked in milk also -- but does anyone eat that?
