Hi, like I said, I am new to the board. My son is 9 years old and we've known that he has food allergies to egg, peanuts/nut products since he was two. I know you all know how this makes us feel as parents. It is very scary. Having said that, I hear alot about the candy - smarties. I limit his chocoate to Vermont Nut Free however, a friend just came back from Canada and bought my son a bag of smarties. I'm relunctant to give him the candy because sometimes I read that it is safe, other times I read that it is not. Can someone clarify this for me? I called a website canadapharmacy.com and their representative told me that although the candy itself does not contain peanuts, it is manufactured in a plant that processes peanuts. If that is the case, to me, it is exactly like giving him M&M's. Can someone help? Thank you.

Hi, and welcome. Nestle Canada has a nut free facility that makes smarties, kit kat, mirage and I believe the fourth is coffee crisp. They are definitely safe. The smarties that you got should have a web site and a 1-800 number on the package, it's always a good idea to double check directly with the manufacturer.

Hi LeeLee,

Welcome

As Cynde said, you should call the 1-800 number on the package of Smarties so that you can call Nestle Canada.

The Smarties, Aero, Kit Kat, Coffee Crisp, and Mirage bars are made in a 100% nut-free/peanut-free facility. They are safe.

The only time the Smarties would be unsafe would be for a special seasonal product (ie: giant Smarties chocolate egg) because it is not manufactured in the same facility, but it would have very noticeable may contain peanuts warnings on the packaging.

The regular boxes of Nestle Canada Smarties are all made in the nut-free/peanut-free facility.
