There are Buckeye trees on the grounds of my child's school. Is it safe for her to handle the nuts (broken and whole)? Please provide sources if you have them. Also, sometimes people in my area wear necklaces made out of Buckeye nuts. Is this something to worry about? My DD is very allergic to peanut (level 6) and has scored lower for treenuts (level 1-2 on RAST).

Would you believe, buckeyes are not true nuts, they are hard shelled seeds? But then again, peanuts are not true nuts and neither are some other nuts we consider tree nuts--like cashews, macadamias, coconut, pistachio, etc. So I suppose anyone could have issues with just about any 'nut', true or not.

Here is an interesting site explaining the different characteristics of fruits called nuts:

Good thing there are no buckeye sandwiches that kids are toting around. But would I let a TN child handle them? For my family, no, probably not. Why? I don't know. Just what I would be comfortable with. If I ever find any sources on it, I will let you know.
