We are currently working with the school our dd will be attending next year. So far they have been GREAT. However, there are a few kinks. The principal is unsure whether we NEED a 504 or just a health care plan. I am going to insist on the 504, and I think the principal will be ok with it. The nurse, however, is insisting that SHE will come up with a healthcare plan at the beginning of the year (in the fall). I am wondering if this will be in addition to the 504 (since I will insist on the 504), and whether or not having a separate health care plan would just make matters more confusing? Would it not essentially be the same thing? I don't feel comfortable with having a health care plan only. It seems to me that the "health care plan" needs to be part of the 504. Any thoughts?
I don't post much here, but do read quite a lot. Thanks to everyone for all your helpful advice and information. I plan to post a copy of our 504 when it is finished.

AnnaMarie thanks for your reply.
I thought of a possible solution. If anyone has any thoughts, PLEASE share them. I was thinking of adding the following to the 504 I'm typing up. If anyone has a better idea, please let me know. I don't want to step on the nurse's toes, because I want her utmost support and help (which she is trying to give), but I do want the 504 in place, and she has no experience with students having one.
L. Individualized Health Care Plan
The Individualized Health Care Plan written by the school nurse shall be attached to this 504 plan. The contents of the Individualized Health Care Plan shall compliment and not be contradictory to any of the specifications in this 504 plan.
How does it sound?
Thanks!
My son has the IHP with all the instructions for his PA/TNA. At the very top of the form it has a box to indicate whether or not it is a 504 plan. My son's is checked off as being a 504 plan.
Thank you for sharing how your childs shool handles this. That is interesting about the checkbox on top for whether it is a 504.
I have an IHP. It works very well. Personally, the reason I believe it works so well is because we have a full-time RN as our school nurse.
I regret not having a 504, tho, because it is much for powerful. You don't know if you're going to have problems down the road with your school enforcing either plan--IHP or 504. So why not go with the plan that offers you the greater recourse should you have need to use them?
If I could *pick* the format for my dd's accommodations, it would be a 504 plan written by our RN.
Good luck. Hope you keep us posted,
Gail

Yes, I also think that would be best. Get the 504 status.
Thank you! The school would rather just have the nurse write up an health plan. I am going to push for the 504, because it has greater "power", and my dd qualifies not only by her PA, but for another health issue. I feel uncomfortable with not having a 504 for my PA dd.
My son also has health needs, but none of his are going to cost him his life if someone makes a mistake, so for him, I will be content with just the IHP if that's what the school prefers.
Just posting an update...
I've been told by the school that getting a 504 for my daughter will be "no problem". Now to get what I want in it is my next challenge. Wish me luck.
Good luck! (and congratulations, BTW)

Update! We are getting the 504, and epi's will not be locked up. Things are looking good, I am so relieved. I don't have the final 504 yet, but will post it when I do.

Hi, sorry I can't really help you at all as I'm north of the border.
I would appreciate you posting the 504 though. I'm finding lots of info here very interesting.
