Our school nurse ordered this wonderful book for the school to help educate the other children about peanut allergy. My girls teachers each read it in class. I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed the story line and the ILLUSTRATIONS!! It is published by Health Press (http://www.healthpress.com) Author:Elizabeth Sussman Nassau

I had read something about the book several months ago, but had not even considered buying it. I would highly recommend it. The story line is about a little pa boy who is tired of being left out, and teased at school...thus he exposes himself and has a reaction. My kids REALLY related to how he felt about missing out on things due to the pa. The story explains how his friends come to realize how serious his pa is. It has an excellent foreward by Dr. Hugh Sampson. Even the back cover has a lot of additional information to help adults understand the seriousness of pa. The price on the book is $14.95. It is hardbound. It also gives info. about the Food Allergy Initiative www.FoodAllergyInitiative.org (I've never checked out this site, but I will.)
Has anyone read it? I would never have seen it if the nurse had not ordered it. She had to be on a waiting list. I am going to order one for myself.

Thanks for recommending the book! (Our 16-month-old PA/TNA son is a little young for it yet, LOL. I'm going to buy him one anyway so we'll have it on hand, though.)

I started researching the FAI, curious about who they are. The board of directors reads like a who's who of NY elite.

Here's a link with information on the founder and Vice Chairman.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet. Any opinions?

I have just checked out this web site and it makes me feel good knowing that there is a non-profit organization promoting awareness and a cure. For some reason Dr. Sampson's name is familiar, does anyone know more about him?

The book sounds great, I am going to call Barnes and Noble to order a copy. My 2nd grade daughter and kindergarten son sound like they could benefit. I would also like to read it to both of their classrooms. Lately my 2nd grader has come home upset because a new boy has been teasing her and threatening her with peanut butter. The teacher and I agreed that we need to remind the kids of the seriousness of this allergy and this book may be the ticket.

Thanks for posting!!

Thanks for the info, I plan to look for this book ASAP. You may want to post this information under "Books" board for anyone searching for books on PA.

Yes, I actually have the book. We got it a couple months ago because my husband is a reporter with the local paper. The features desk people know that our daughter has PA, and they gave us the book when it came through for review.

It is really good, about a boy who feels awkward about his allergy because everyone teases him. Then he decides to do the peanutbutter birdfeeder craft just to prove that he was okay. But he goes into anaphylactic shock and has to go to the hospital. That helps everyone realize how serious the problem is. And when the boy comes back to school, the one kid who had teased him the most apologizes.

I haven't read it to Patricia because she is too young to understand it yet. But it would be great for school aged kids.

I bought "Peanut Butter Jam" for my five year old who just started kindergarten this year. Each of the kids have a week at school where they are the "star." During Bryce's week the teacher let her bring her favorite book to read to the class and she brought this one. I thought it was a good way to make her friends more aware of the allergy and to make Bryce feel special (since she was like the character in the book). The only thing I don't like about the book is that it portrays the use of peanut butter in the classroom (during a craft project) as okay as long as the PA child stays at a separate desk. To me, pb shouldn't be a part of any class project. Even if the PA child stays at a separate desk and misses out on the fun (which isn't right to begin with), there is still an enormous opportunity for peanut butter to be on everyone's hands and all over the desk surfaces in the room. Not to mention, the water fountain handles, pencil sharpener handle, etc... You get my point. Still though...my daughter really likes the book and I'm glad we have it for her. I just wish the teacher had taken more responsibility at the end instead of it looking like the child should have been more careful. Joey
ps. hope I didn't spoil the book for anyone.

I just received this book today, and I have to say I'm not really sure I like it. I'm afraid it might give my child an idea, not to mention other kids (about teasing, about wanting to see the reaction first hand, etc.). It's times like this that I wish I could have gotten my hands on a copy of it before I bought it, but I have never seen a kid's book about PA in my local bookstores.

So, now I have this book I'm not thrilled about. Anybody interested? Probably not, now!!!!

We were sent a copy of this book from FAI and my son loves it. He is thrilled to have a book about kids "just like him". I would like to find him one with kids a little closer to his age.

Hi everyone!

I did buy the book and liked it, except for a couple of issues referred to above. I lent the book to my daughter's second grade teacher and I wrote a forward stating, I know that she would not be foolish enough to do a class project which could leave out my child and expose my children and any other pa kids to all that igE protein. Then she lent the book to my sons kindergarten teacher and the other kindergarten teacher. That way all the teachers could read the forward in the book and get the idea.

Teasing will occur eventually, don't be naive enough to think it will not begin soon.

Good luck!

For those of you not familiar with the Food Allergy Initiative (FAI), here is a description of what this wonderful organization is about:

"FAI is the first organization dedicated to a strategic, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to food allergies. Our program is designed to help the millions of children and adults who live in fear of eating the wrong food with every bite they take."

"Funds raised by FAI are invested in research that seeks to find a cure and improve clinical treatment. FAI has established a Medical Advisory Board to identify and recommend the most promising research in the United States. FAI also provides grants to entities that serve and support food allergic patients and their families at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City."

"In addition, it is FAI

I hate to say it, but this book makes me nervous. Imagine a child with a peanut allergy who's teased a lot by the other kids at school. After reading this book, he/she might think that the best way to win the other kids' acceptance would be to eat nuts and have a reaction.

I bought a copy of the book, but am not sure yet if I'll let Tim read it (when he's old enough ... he's only 19 months old now).

I found a children's book on PA called 'Ally the Allergic Elephant' on Amazon.com It is about an elephant that can't eat peanuts, going thru different reactions, foods to avoid, and foods that are safe. The age group is probably 4 - 8. Very good!!
