Our son's 504 plan calls for having all Kindergarten kids (and teachers) wash their hands with soap and water upon entering the classroom in the AM.

Because all of K will be peanut/tree nut free, the plan calls for use of disposable hand wipes after snacks.

School is looking for guidance re:what soap is safe, as well as handwipes.

Any suggestions for safe soap? Safe handwipes (I've actually heard that some are not safe??)? Any suggestions for brands to avoid?

Please sharing your learnings...

Gary

I'm sorry you haven't heard from anybody yet - I use Wet Ones Antibacterial wipes for my PA daughter and/or Clean and Smooth Liquid Hand Soap. She also uses Dove Unscented soap with no problem.

Only hot soapy water unbinds the peanut protein from your hands or a surface.

Last year the Kindergarten class used tons of Walmart store-brand Equate wipes. The new shipment is expected any day now as we are using last year's wipes--today was the first day of school here.

However, Ryan doesn't use the wipes. He washes his hands with soap and water while everyone else uses wipes throughout the day. The soap is parent supplied.

We put in our 504 that the students are to wash their hands with soap and water. Using the wipes really just spreads the residue. It is better than nothing, but I want to show them even more how serious this is and require them to wash with soap and water in the morning, right after lunch if they have eaten p/b or nuts, and anytime through out the day that the teacher feels they should.

We have our final 504 meeting Wednesday. We presented our 504 last Wednesday and now everything is now going through the Superintendent on our plan before they agree or disagree to any of our 504. Wednesday will be interesting. Will let you know how it goes.

Jeannie, I hope you will post your entire 504 plan at some future point after you have final approval. It helped me so much to be able to pull up plans from the boards to share with me school.

Good luck tomorrow.

The reason for my question is that I am aware that some brands of soap may contain almonds or other contaminants. Similarly, I think? that some scented wipes may be a problem.

While we have done a little research on soap and wipes in the past (for home use), we haven't investigated any "institutional" brands that might be purchased by a school (although they may just buy the same stuff that average consumers buy???)

So, we wanted to understand what brands to use or avoid when it comes to soap, and also wipes, since the school has asked for guidance.
