I just went to the store tonight to get these chocolate chips specifically so that I could make some white icing brown (I didn't know whether or not the tubed icing was safe and I'm desperate over here! lol) and was disappointed. =( First off, I'm in TX, so maybe that has something to do with it, but NONE of the chocolate chips were safe!

The Semi-sweet chocolate chips 12oz pkg, the Milk chocolate chips 11.5oz pkg, and the Double chocolate chips 11.5oz pkg ALL have this warning on them:

"May contain trace amounts of nuts, four gluten, and milk protein."

So it's back to the drawing board (literally!) for me. I have to come up with some way to decorate a cake to look like a soccer ball PA safely by tomorrow afternoon. yikes!

I know someone who uses cocoa to darken their icing. I have never tried it but it may be an option - sorry if this is too late.

No not too late at all! I was actually supposed to get the cake done last night, but I umm, kinda fell asleep! LOL So, here I am at a quarter till 11am, and haven't even started. And it has to be ready by 4pm! ack! lol I'll do a search on here and see if I can determine what cocoa would be safest, then send hubby out to get some. =) Thanks for the idea!!

I don't know if they carry this brand in Texas, but Guittard chips are safe. They are made in a peanut-free factory.

I'm not sure if other stores in TX carry Guittard or not, but the Wal-Mart here doesn't. =( I looked for those too, but didn't find them. Looks like we'll be ordering our chocolate chips from Vermont Nut-Free from now on. I do so love mail-order! =)

Nestle semi-sweet choc chips are safe. All the other ones..the milk and dark chips say "peanut traces" as the last ingredient...but the semi sweet do NOT. I have called and feel comfortable with them. If they are putting the "peanut traces" on the other bags..I feel that they would put them on the semi-sweet if there was a problem......

Ah! ok! I'll check for them again next time I'm at the store. They were completey out of the semi-sweet last night (because it's Halloween weekend maybe?? *shrug*). I did check the milk and dark chocolate ones, but like you say, they have the alert on there. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! =)

Now I'm confused. There is a posting on 10/24 under the Nestle Chocolate Chip thread that says not to eat nestle semi-sweet chocolate chips and that someone had a reaction from them. Does anyone know whether these chips are in fact safe?

Mattsmom- I don't know if Texas has the Hershey Milk Chocolate Chips but we use them all the time and have never had a problem. We also use them for potty training rewards since we can't use M&M's like we did for my daughter.

I think you have to go with your own comfort level. If Nestle is putting the "peanut traces" on their other bags (milk choc. chips, etc) and NOT the semi-sweet, I trust that they don't feel it is necessary. I have called them numerous times and have been told they are allergy aware. I tend to use products of big manufacturers and unless I see the "manuf. in a plant with peanuts" or a "peanut traces"...I feel pretty safe. Hope this helps.
