Just thought I would post this--I'm not sure if I'm just being absentminded or I just missed something, but I don't think so. For the last year or two, I have heard that using Ghiradelli chocolate chips for baking was "safe". I've made several items for my son with them, read the package, etc., etc. Just two weeks ago, I made a batch of cookies with them and the package had no nut "statements." The other day, a friend of mine bought me a Ghiradelli milk chocolate bar. Even though it was for me, I read the label (like I do with everything now out of curiousity). I noted that the candy bar had a "may contain" statement on it. "Hmmmm" I thought, well that is not strange as their candy bars have a million different varieties. Last night I went to make some more cookies and I looked at my brand new bags of Ghiradelli chips. Guess what--they've got the "may contain" statement. Now, have I been MISSING that all this time or is this a new thing? I thought awhile back that some of the people on this board were using them. Oh well, another "not safe" product. Just really wanted to warn anyone who was using them. Looks like Vermont Nut-Free will be my only choice.

Do you mean the Hershey's candy bar? The one in the chocolate colored wrapper?
Yup. You should still contact Hershey's yourself and confirm that. I'm sure if you do a search on this board, you'll find the number, but I'm not the only one on the board that has been told that the plain Hershey Bar is made on a dedicated line.

I've also seen the "may contain" on ghiradelli chips. There is another type of chocolate chips that I use. It's called Guittard, and is manufactured in California. I have both phoned and emailed the company and have been told that it is safe for PA folks! They indicated that there is no risk for cross contamination. As always, you should check for yourself, but I've had luck!

Is Hershey's Chocolate Syrup safe? I tried to call them today, but they were closed (We called at 5:30-somthing, and they close at 4 pm) Thanks for your help!

My four year old son is involved in a church program called Awanas. The director is making little bags of candy to give out at the Costume Party next Wed. night. Everything that she showed me was okay except one that I am not sure about. Does anyone know about Whoppers? There is no warning on the label. Thanks.
I called Hershey today to ask about the Whoppers (completely forgot about the syrup)and the lady did not give me a direct answer of wether it is 100% safe or not. She said that they do make nut free candy on the same line as candy containing nuts but that they take the machines apart and clean each piece separately and then it is inspected by several different people. Then they have a separate company/group come in and perform tests to see if there is any peanut traces/residue left over. If some is discovered on the test then a warning will be put on the label. She did tell me that the Milk Chocolate, size 1.55, is made on a separate line! I will start buying some of those for holiday candy!

That's great that Hershey's is good with their labeling! Well, if they're that good, then I imagine their syrup is safe too.
Darn it! I was going to try calling them today! It's too late now, and they're closed on weekends. Drat. Oh well, I'll try again Monday.

Not all of Ghiardelli stuff is nut free. They have a peanut free plant in California and you have to know how to read the bar code to know if the choclate came from that plant. Becuase the chocolate is only peanut free and not nut free, I feel better with Vermont nut free or even Hershey's regular sized chocolate bar. I like Hershey's new policy of having an "Allergy Task Force" and the regular sized bar is now made on a dedicated nut free line.
