I was wondering if anyone has an allergy awareness program for their school. We have a PTA board position called youth protection. Someone suggested that there should be a program to educate children about the seriousness of food allergies under this officer's responsibility.
Please advise. I don't know where to begin but think this is a great idea. I appreciate any and all ideas.
Thank you.
I think this is a great idea and one I'd like to expand in our school. Currently, the nurse meets with all teachers and staff prior to the start of school to train them on food allergies and the use of epi-pens. The nurse also visits my child's classroom within the first few days of school and does a little in-service for students about food allergies without giving any specific children's names.
I did reach out to a Girl Scout troop at our school and helped them earn their Be a Pal Patch (http://www.foodallergy.org/Girl_scouts_badge.pdf). I've offered this to other scout troops at the school as well.

When educated the children are usually great advocates for their friends with food allergies. It is important to remember the parent community to help them understand should they be affected by any policies the school may choose to impliment around food allergy safety.
