I have a child with a peanut allergy. We were advised from the allergist to avoid all tree nuts, shellfish/seafood, etc. I recently heard about Sunbutter and I have read that it is an alternative to peanut butter. My question is...are sunflower seeds safe for my child?? Since we were advised to avoid any nut products, will he be able to consume this product without any consequences? I did call the allergist to ask about sunflower seeds (my child wanted to eat some but I was unsure) and he said to avoid them. My child has eaten sesame seed buns.

We love SunButter and eat it all the time here. It is made from sunflower seeds & some cane syrup in a peanut and tree nut facility. Surely, many companies would have sunflower seeds cross-contaminated with nuts (trail mixes and such), so maybe your allergist is worried about x-contam? SunButter is never cross-contaminiated (yet, there are sunflower seed butters by other companies that might be--this is brand specific).

I would get further clarification from your allergist, but if your child is only PA/TNA, then I would imagine SunButter would be safe.
