Does anyone know of a brand of icing tint that doesn't have a peanut warning on it? It needs to include red coloring that is good enough to achieve "elmo" red without tasting bitter. I was disappointed to see the warning on Wilton tints!

I don't know of one. There are very "few" tints that will make a deep red without tasting bitter...and I mean bitter.

Perhaps you can look up a natural way to get that color? It probably won't be that red you want, but I bet there are juice concentrates etc. that can give you a red look.

Have you called Wilton to see why they put that warning label on? It might be something benign that you feel comfortable with.

Let us know!

I called Wilton and they were unable to tell me anything more than the plant that produces the 12 pack of icing color (all variations may be produced at different plants) also processes tree nuts, but not peanuts. She had no info about what state the nuts were in (crushed vs. whole etc). She did say that they use thorough cleaning and sanitizing practices. Has anyone had any problems using Wiltons paste icing color?

I just made a cake this weekend for my daughter and I used McCormick's food coloring. My son is PA and I have used their coloring may times with no problems. You can just keep on adding the drops until you get the red color you want....it's fun. I was going for a pink and just kept adding colors until I got what I wanted. Hope that helps:)

americolor icing colors are 100% nut/treenut/peanut/gluten free... made in facilities that are completely free... I just got off the phone with their corporate office, and they ensured me they were. Hobby lobby carries many of their colors if you have one nearby, also many cake shops use them and will order their products for you. They also make piping gel, but not icing. I am still working on a safe icing, other than from scratch.
my mom has used wilton for years, and in fact used them on cakes she fed my son, without checking them or telling me so I could. Fortunately there was no reaction, but still I am not happy with the unneccesary risk she posed with it.
