Ice Cream?

Hi, my 18month old daughter was just diagnosed with a peanut allergy. Before the diagnosis I had plans of making her an ice cream addict (like myself) this summer. While in the grocery store today I could not find one brand of ice cream that did not also make a flavor that included peanuts. Not even sherbert is safe!

So can those with more experience help me out? Is there peanut free ice cream out there? Thanks!

There is a range of views on the subject of ice cream. Mine is on the conservative end of the spectrum because my son's big reaction occurred while eating ice cream. To my knowledge (and I have looked hi and lo!), there is no ice cream in the US made in a peanut-free, nut-free facility. Many ice cream companies make vanilla first and then the more complex, nut-containing flavors afterward. They say they follow Good Manufacturing Practices. Many allergic people eat Breyer's Vanilla and others without incident. Only a few months ago, however, there was an allergy incident report from Eat, Learn, Live about a boy who suffered an anaphylactic reaction due to trace amounts of peanut in Good Humor Rainbow Sherbet.

We own a Cuisinart ice cream maker and make our ice cream at home. It is very easy and takes only 30 minutes. And we know there are no traces of peanut or nuts! :)

Hi!

I have a severe peanut and tree nut allergy.
I am not sure where you live, so this product might not be in your local stores, but I would check out philly swirl. They make these fudge ice cream pops that are fantastic! And they are both peanut and treenut free and are made in a dedicated tree nut and peanut free facility!!! They have a website, so I would just search the internet for philly swirl!

Like Jennifer I also make my own ice cream!!

Yeah, Kendra's right! Philly Swirl is an italian ice (not to different than ice cream) and it is sold in cups and also on sticks. It's yummy and safe!

We use Breyer's Vanilla. We do have an ice cream maker but it's a pain to make it for everyday eating-we use it for birthdays. So far no problems with the Breyer's.

I don't know about the US but in Canada we have Chapman's Ice Cream. They make 4 or 5 flavours (only in the small cartons) that are made in a peanut free facility.
Good luck!

We eat Blue Bunny safely and feel confident with their labeling. We love their chocolate cherry, yes safe chocolate. I recently called Safeway (Not sure where you live) and many of their store brands are safe. We had their Vanilla. We also enjoy many ice cream bars, sandwiches and cups made by COOL Classics.

My daughter's class had a 50's day and made rootbeer floats. My dd is pa, tna, ea, ma, and allergic to rice as far as her food allergies. I could not find a soy ice cream that didn't have some sort of nut on the same line. I bought an ice cream attachment to my kitchen aid mixer. My daughter was thrilled about getting to do the same thing as her class. I am hopeful one day she will outgrow the milk allergy and we will use the ice cream maker a lot more at that time.

does the cuisinart ice cream maker work good?
if so what are the ingridients you use to make the ice cream

This is the ice cream maker I have:

http://www.cuisinart.com/products/ice_cream/ice-20.html

It comes with a recipe book.

You need to freeze the bowl--keep it in the freezer (so it does take up space). But you take it out, mix up the ingredients, turn it on and in 30 min you have soft serve. Freeze it longer and you get hard ice cream.

There are cook and no cook recipes. We use the no cook egg free ones consisting of milk and or cream, sugar and any add in like choc chips, mint flavor etc.

We LOVE ours. It's small and perfect for our family. If I was really into it--I might get a larger one.

i give my daughter, who is highly allergic to peanut, turtle mnt products. they place the following label on their products "Turtle Mountain applies strict quality control measures in an effort to prevent contamination by undeclared food allergens. To assure our preventative measures are effective, we sample test our product for the presence of gluten, dairy, peanut and almond allergens using state of the art testing methods." the coconut mint chip is delicious!

Although they do make a couple products with nuts, I trust the labelling on the Turtle Mountain stuff too. I've had a few of the coconut kinds, and I've given it to my younger cousin who is allergic to everything under the sun. :)

I'm currently Canada, and we have TONS of safe ice cream here. I would suggest people to check store brand ice creams in the US-- call about them-- because often they only make Vanilla and Chocolate, so you may luck out!

I'm not sure how far these products are distributed, but North Star has a plant in St. Louis that is peanut, tree nut and egg free. I found out from a VP at the company, then later spoke with the plant manager. The plant code for products from this particular plant is 29-277. This code is typically added in ink when the ice cream novelties are packaged - after the box has already been printed. I have only found ice cream and popsicle-type novelties - sandwiches, pops, etc. at this plant. They do make the individual vanilla, chocolate and van/choc swirl cups of ice cream, which are handy to take to parties or keep at school.

Hope this helps someone!

You may wish to confirm this, but I was told by the manufacturer that the facilities that manufacture Whole Fruit Sorbet and Whole Fruit Fruit Bars are peanut free; however, they do contain coconut.

"Are SheerBliss Ice Cream® products safe for those with peanut, soy, or dairy allergies?
SheerBliss Ice Cream® does not include any nuts or nut by-products as ingredients; but our ice cream is produced at a plant that does produce products which include tree nuts. In addition, SheerBliss Ice Cream® is a dairy product, therefore this product is not recommended for those with dairy allergies."

It appears that this information may apply only to the pints, though. I will ask for clarification. See http://www.sheerblissicecream.com/company/pdf/SB_PAS_rev0709.pdf

The info you attach seems to indicate that the pints are ok, but the novelty ice creams are "processed in a facility with..."

We eat Blue Bunny and haven't had any problems. You need to check the labels carefully, though. They do have products with peanuts/tree nuts and I do believe they are all processed in the same facility but the use Good Manufacturing processes - which means they clean the machines --

I checked Ritas.com as I always do when our local Rita's is about to open for the season, only to find under "What's New" the availability of REESE's peanut butter cup candy toppings/blend-ins!

This is extremely disappointing, as it raises a significant risk of cross-contamination of the other products during preparation and service by Rita's workers - usual teenagers.

Please go to http://ritas.com and contact them if you share this concern. Let them know they risk losing their loyal peanut-allergic customers and ask that they withdraw this menu item!

We ate Breyers vanilla for months without incident. Then one day, he broke out in hives afterward. It may be fine for lots of people, but it isn't going to be in our house anymore. (And my new Cuisinart ice cream maker is awesome!)
