Any trusted *store bought* ice creams out there?

We're wondering what brands of ice creams are safe for PA kids. We realize that many of you make your own ice cream but would greatly appreciate any responses for safe store-bought ice cream in the US. In the past we purchased plain vanilla from Breyers. Any favorite brands out there?!

I also purchase Breyers. It is the only store brand that I will buy. I have purchased vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, neopolitan, and fudge swirl. My PA son has had no reactions to these flavors. Their website has changed to say they have, "Special Handling Procedures" but in the past it has said that they do allergen washes of their lines - this is why I have purchased their brand.

I'm just sharing this story about an experience I had with Breyer's ice cream.

About 2-years-ago I went to a grocery store in California to get a container of the Breyer's Vanilla Bean ice cream and upon scanning over the ingredients list I noticed there seemed to be a change; it contained egg yolks! It was very disappointing since I am also allergic to egg.

I was however a bit suspicious and, on a hunch, grabbed a carton of the Breyer's French Vanilla and sure enough there were NO egg yolks listed. As I am sure most of you know the eggs are what makes regular vanilla 'french.'

All of the cartons of vanilla and french vanilla on the grocer's shelves had the reversed ingredient labels although all other labeling and pictures seemed correct for the respective flavor.

Has anyone else ever seen or heard of this happening?

This is precisely why I don't trust ice cream makers that use shared lines. What if Breyers had done the labeling switcheroo with a peanut-containing flavor. Not worth the risk for me. I will eat Chapmans when in Canada and Straus Family Creamery when in the states. I also trust Carvel soft serve when in a state that has them. Everyone has a different comfort zone, though.

North Star supposedly has a peanut free plant in St Louis that does ice cream sandwiches. I have a box in my freezer, and am going to call about it tomorrow. Will let you know.

I just got off the phone with Dove in reference to their ice cream bars. They told me to check their packaging each time. If the ingredient is present, it will be in the ingredients list. If there is a risk of cross-contamination it will be in the "May contain" statement. If it doesn't have a may contain or if your allergen does not appear in the may contain area then it is safe. Good to know.

Just called North Star the other day. The plant in St. Louis is nut free, but the other plants aren't.

I've never heard of North Star, where are you from? What ice creams do they make?

We use Ben and Jerry's and have never had a problem. Ben and Jerry's ice cream parlors in So. California also keep all their peanut/nut ice cream in a separate freezer. They are trying to be allergy friendly to those with peanut allergies.

We love Target brand (Market Pantry). Especially the mint chocolate chip. And it's not that expensive. ($2.79). Obviously the flavors with peanut butter and nuts aren't safe but the packages are clearly marked. Also, the plainer flavors of Wegmans brand are safe also.

Target Brand uses "May contain" on their ice cream if it's made on shared equipment?

are you asking if target uses the may contain or are you stating it. You have a question mark and yet it doesn't sound like a question.

Yes, I'm asking the previous poster, busy mom. From her post she said it was clearly marked and I wasn't sure if she meant in the ingredients or " may contain" sorry for the confusion, I'm glad you asked because I would hate for people to misread my post and think I meant they were safe!

Yikes! By meaning "clearly marked" I meant by the title of the ice cream (i.e. Chocolate with Peanut Butter swirl or the Maple Walnut. ). Otherwise the label says: contains milk & soy. (That's on the mint chocolate chip.) Sorry for any confusion. I don't even pickup the flavors with nuts in them!!!
