My 16 year old daughter had a reaction today at school while eating "Xtra Cheddar Flavor Blasted Goldfish". She's had these Goldfish many times in the past with no problems, so we're wondering if she may have somehow ingested peanut traces at the same time from another source. (She's also allergic to fish, shellfish, and nuts, but feels sure this was a peanut reaction due to a distinctive taste she gets in her mouth with exposure to peanuts.)
Her teacher gave had to give her 2 epipens before the symptoms subsided, and she is fine tonight after spending most of the day in the ER. I'm just wondering if anyone else has reacted to Goldfish. There are no warnings on the package, but I plan to get in touch with Pepperidge Farms tomorrow to check on the possibility of cross contamination.
She had the epi in her backpack, had her teacher give her the injection while the office was notified to call 911. The school policy is that only the nurse and a few other people in the office are trained and authorized to administer the epi. We had been okay with this until now because she only brings her own food to school so we've felt that the possibility of a reaction at school was remote. As far as I know, the teacher had never even seen an epi before so my daughter talked her through it. Her symptoms were first the bad taste, then shortness of breath, then swelling of her tongue, and throat. The first injection slowed the progression of the swelling, but didn't stop it. We think this may have been because the teacher pulled it out too quickly and she didn't receive the full dose.
She told the teacher she needed a second dose, and to hold it in place for 10 seconds. She's had 5 reactions since age 4, and this is the first time that one epi didn't eliminate the symptoms.
I talked to Pepperidge Farms today. They said that there are none of the 8 common allergens in the facility where these Goldfish are processed. They asked me to return the package with the unused portion, and they would analyze it and notify me of the results.
Arroyo, I'm very sorry to hear about your daughter's reaction. I'm happy that she is doing ok. Would you please post an update when you hear back from Pepperidge Farm about the results of their testing. We eat goldfish quite often.
Just wondering, did she open the package herself or were they given to her by someone (such as coming from one of those big containers that someone else could've had their hands in)

At Peanuttees we provide a serious message in our silly slogans.
Our goal is to offer fun tee shirts that kids will love to wear!
I'll post an update as soon as I hear anything. The Goldfish came from a new package that she opened herself at home. We have an appointment with the allergist next week to try to determine if she's developed an allergy to something new.
Arroyo, Thank you so much for sharing the detailed information on your daughters reaction and the feedback from Pepperidge Farms. Your daughter sounds very well educated and responsible. Again, I am glad she is doing OK.

I have a 2 year old and they are a very common afternoon snack. She has not to this point had a reaction from them. Very sorry to hear about your daughters reaction.
Update........PF responded that they analyzed the Goldfish in question and wrote that "nothing was found to indicate that the product was responsible for the alleged allergic reaction."
Was it possible it was a delayed reaction from something ingested earlier?
She was retested for the foods she ate earlier, and nothing showed up. We think she must have gotten a small amount of peanut butter on her hand, and was exposed that way. It seemed hard to believe until a couple of weeks ago when we were at dog training class, and they had used peanut butter earlier that day for the dogs. To make a long story short.....some got on our leash, she realized it, and hurried to wash her hands. Then her eye started itching......30 minutes later she was in the ER with a full blown reaction. Until now she had never had a reaction that we couldn't trace to something she ate, but she now is clearly at risk in regard to touching allergens.
That is so scary. I am so worried and afraid of that happening with my son. So far it seems to be just when he eats it not from touching. He has fed chipmunks peanuts and been fine before he was diagnosed. I wonder if it will start to change. I hope not, I am already paranoid of what he eats.
Glad she is ok and good thing she realized it right away.

Arroyo, I am so sorry to hear about your daughters reaction! I'm glad she is doing OK! We have not had the Extra Cheddar Goldfish so I can't comment, but we have had many other flavors including the pretzel with no problems. I will be interested in Pepperidge Farms response.
I have a couple of questions if you wouldn't mind answering. Was 911 called after the first injection? Did the symptoms subside and then return, or did it take two Epi's to supress the initial symptoms? Was her Epi in the class (with the teacher) or with her? I hate to hear these stories, however it seems like you had a good safety plan in place which could help others.
Thank you, and again, I am happy to hear she is doing OK.
