Ok here's what happened:

- At 15 months I gave my son a Reese's cup and he was fine.

- Several weeks - month later, I gave him his first peanut butter sandwich and within 10 minutes he gets a red bumpy rash around his mouth. No other apparent symptoms.

- For 2-3 months we diligently read all labels and avoid everything nut.

- At 18 months they run a nut panel blood test and tell us he is not allergic to any of the nuts. I ask the the doctor, "so what was that rash he got from the peanut butter sandwich?" She goes, "Well it was probably a reaction from...something"..... Yeah. thanks.

She advised us to give him peanut butter again and watch him but I'm scared of it being worse next time cause she said the blood test is 'usually' accurate, or at least I think that was her words.

What should I do?

My suggestion is to take your son to an allergist for further testing, not just the pediatrician. Make sure they do a skin test as well as run the blood work. Also get a copy of the blood work for yourself. Do not give your child peanut butter at home in case there is a worse reaction. Good luck. Keep us posted.

I agree with lynnie. Get thee to an allergist for either 1) further testing, or 2) a food challenge in the office.

Yes I definitely agree that you should go to an allergist who can specialize in these types of things. Sometimes tests come up false positive so I wouldn't trust just one test, and in the meantime I would keep your child away from all nuts. Since reactions do get more severe upon exposure, I think you're right in avoiding nuts all together. No matter what though, stay strong, and things will get figured out! You should know that you're doing everything right :) I'm 22 now and my mother remembers when I was an infant and she was tirelessly trying to find answers, so my heart goes out to you and your family!
