The school is doing an activity soon where each child decorates their own gingerbread house. The house will be made of icing and Graham crackers. I think I have figured out the house part but need some help with safe candies. My son is tree nut and peanut allergic and we avoid all items made in same facility as nuts.
Below is what I received from the teacher. Please help me determine safe brands of each item or a safe alternative. Unfortunately, I need to let the teacher know ASAP.
Graham crackers
Large marshmallows
Small marshmallows
Mini candy canes
Peppermints
Gum drops
Skittles
Rice Chex cereal
Jelly beans
Red hots
Chocolate chips
Cake sprinkles
Kroger brand (smiths) has safe holiday gumdrops.
Most any brand marshmallows are safe. I have bought the kroger brand and been fine with them.
Gimbal's jelly beans from walmart are safe.
We use Hershey's brand chocolate chips.
Skittles are also good.
I know I have bought peppermints before. I think I would check kroger on those.
Oh Spangler is a good brand for candy canes.
Seems I have used Red Hots too but can't recall the brand name on those.
I have called Kroger about their candy before and felt comfortable with their methods. They get a lot of their candy from Sunrise Confections. I was very impressed with Sunrise confections customer service. They did research and called me back and also sent me a letter with the information.
(My dd has both severe peanut and tree nut allergies and I have a tight comfort zone with her).
Good luck. Hope that helps.
Linda
Well first I will say that this is a total comfort level thing.
If it were me, I would be in there during the activity reading labels etc.
Many of those foods we consume but it's dependent upon brand.
We personally buy products (mostly name brand) that do not contain our allergens or have a warning label on them.
While warning labels are not required by law--we have found that many companies who are worried or do not have safe cleaning practices will put them on.
Labels and manufacturing practices change which is why you need to read them each and every time.
We have used Nabisco and Keebler Grahams
Regular skittles
starburst jelly beans
enjoy life choc chips
red hots are not safe to my knowledge
I would put an order in through a company that specializes in allergen safe foods/candy.
My website has a list of companies that cater to our community. Look under Allergen Free Foods.

A couple options for candy is Divvie's, Vt Nut Free, Enjoy Life, Surfs Sweets, Yummy Earth
Hope that helps!

My child's class did this in 1st grade. Here's a supply list (though you'd have to check the labels and call since this was in 2006:
___ 1 box Honey Maid Graham Crackers
___ 1 box Powdered Sugar
___ 1 Large bag of Skittles
___ 1 Large box of Dots Gum Drops (sugar coated if you can find them)--There are holiday ones out now at Target.
___ 1 box of Bob’s Small Candy Canes- (BEWARE, I saw some regular size Bob's candy canes with "May contains" on them last night.)
___ 1 bag of Bob’s Sweet Stripes (or any of Bob’s peppermint hard candy) (BEWARE, I saw some regular size Bob's candy canes with "May contains" on them last night.)
___ 1 bag of Crème Savers Fruit Variety Hard Candy or Lifesavers Hard Candies in a bag
___ 1 bag of Kraft Jet Puffed Mini Marshmallows (colored if you can find them, otherwise
white marshmallows are ok)
___ 1 bag of Hershey’s Color Coated Candy Kisses (I don't think these are safe anymore- either contain Shea Nut oil or traces of peanuts/tree nuts.
___ 1 bag of Rold Gold Pretzels by Frito Lay
___ 1 pack of Red Vines or Twizzlers Licorice
___ 1 pack of Lifesaver Gummies
___ 1 bottle of Red Hots sprinkles by Cake Mate
* I second that on the Gimbals jelly beans as a previous poster listed. They can be found at Wal-Mart and we love them because they have cool flavors like the unsafe Jelly Belly does.
* And I buy Spangler candy canes because they have such awesome labeling..."dedicated equipment, does not contain peanuts or tree nuts..." Love them for that!
Hope this helps!

Ugh. I am not a fan of food in the classroom! Off the top of my head (please double-check because I am doing this from memory and things can change overnight).
When I have checked for foods from peanut-free, tree nut free facilities, these were ok at that time:
Skittles
Junior Mints
Enjoy Life or VT Nut Free chocolate chips
Gimbals Jelly Beans (anything from Gimbals is ok)
Betty Crocker and Cake Decor sprinkles (NOT MIX-INS!!!)
anything from Tootsie
Sorry I don't have any more info.
Good luck!
