Hi,
I am new to this whole allergy situation and have a question. I cannot eat peanuts or pine nuts anymore but this week I had bread at two different restaurants and my face flushed and felt a little strange. My nose got itchy too. Could this be a reaction to something in the breads? I dont know if that is a typical reaction to an allergen.
thanks for the help.
Oh, ok, thanks. I will take that precaution until my visit to the allergist. I hope you are doing well with whatever allergies you have.
Sounds like it could very well have been a reaction...quite possibly a case of cross-contamination.
With any baked products it is important to refer to ingredients lists as most bakeries have nut products on site. It is difficult to trust bread in a restaurant as you have no reference to help determine it's safety. I still find that not everyone is up to speed on the cross-contamination issue, even in the restaurant industry where you might expect them to get it. Often times if you ask about nut ingredients they think if it doesn't specifically have nuts it is safe. Unfortunately that is where you run a risk of cross-contamination issues when dining out.
As anaphylactic allergies continue to rise, there seems to be greater understanding about cross-contamination. In the 9 years we have been dealing with nut allergies we have seen gradual progression. That being said, there is still so much more work to be done to bring these concerns to the forefront.
Good luck managing your allergies...there are alot of resources out there to help you. One in particular that I know of is www.bestallergysites.com. It can be an overwhelming experience and alot of it is self-education and advocacy.

Thanks for thinking of me. Yes, I did get to the allergist and of course am allergic to all the typical things, ragweed, grass, cats, mold. Unfortunately I am allergic to peanuts too. He didnt' do the test for pine nuts or soy, didn't have them there, I have to go back for that. I did however, leave with a script for an epi pen and he gave me an inhaler, as I also have asthma. I am so happy to have this confirmed, well, not happy, but glad to have the proper info and tools to help me if need be.
Thank you for all your concern. That helps so much.
I hope you have a great day.

Might have been cross contaminated with peanuts. Also, could be wheat or yeast allergies.
Please lay off the bread.
I do not eat any bread because there is too much of a chance for cross contamination because so many breads have nuts etc. now.
