I'm new to this whole allergy, and still figuring out the "safe" places where I don't have to be on the watch for nut-containing products. I assumed the library would be such a place. WRONG! I was appalled to discover that they have a "cafe" with vending machines stock full of candy, chocolate, bags of mixed nuts, etc, etc.
I have no problem with people eating nuts in places where food is obviously going to be served and consumed. But a library???? Guess I'm going to have to find another branch to take my daughter to...
I sent a note to the main library .... Not sure they will do anything, but I'm sure I'll just need to find another branch to take her to. People will be getting their "nutty" fingers all over the tables and books. It's a little disappointing, to say the least!
That is pretty sad that a public library would do such a thing and not only that but possibly open themselves to a potential lawsuit. I am struggling myself with going anywhere and touching things. There is always in my case a chance of cross contamination. Just keep you and your daughter safe and maybe bring this potential lawsuit to the eyes and ears of the brach libraries.
You can also talk to them. I did this and our library changed things because they hadn't realized the risk to kids.
I received a response back from my local branch manager that cafe's with food items provide a more "welcoming" atmosphere in the library, and all the city branches have them. They said that's it's similar to going to a grocery store, and that parents just need to take more precautions.
HA! Great ... my library thinks it's a grocery store.
Thankfully, we have a good county system of libraries, so I'll start going there. If this is a trend in new libraries maybe food allergy parents need to advocate to local governments NOT to turn them into an eateries.

Wow! I would have never thought of the library as a "nut zone" either. Do you regularly use this library...maybe you could let someone know of your dilema...whomever stocks their vending machines probably has many other items they could put in. You would think, though that a library would be concerned about damage to the the books from food/beverage spills!?!
