Though I do not suffer from PA, my boyfriend does. To keep him safe, I try to stay away from peanut-containing foods. Whenever I bring him home for a weekend, my family does everything they're able to to keep him safe as well.
I was wondering if anyone else has had to make the transition from peanut-eatters to nonpeanut-eaters. Has anyone else struggled with this?
skm001,
I probably don't have to tell you how much people with this allergy appreciate when people take measures to keep them safe in the way of avoiding peanuts. It can be an adjustment having to avoid foods you once enjoyed when a family member is diagnosed, but the alternative is not an option for many of us with peanut allergy sufferers.
My son has a very severe nut allergy with Peanut topping the list. We keep all nut products out of our home and try to make sure he stays away from anywhere we suspect might have them. Our biggest challenge is travel, specifically by air. We have figured out ways to get around certain limitations and give him as many freedoms and experiences as we can.
Staying away from nuts and dangerous environments for him is a small price to pay for his safety and I wouldn't choose to do it any other way. My husband and I did just fly to Vegas for a getaway without the kids and though I would never eat nut products on the plane out of respect for all passengers that may be at risk, we did indulge while in Vegas. We ate nuts non-stop while away LOL...except for the day we were heading back.
Good luck in dealing with your boyfriend's allergy. Sounds like he's got the right girlfriend in his court!!

My 3 year old daughter has a severe peanut allergy. However I can honestly say I didnt realize how bad until she was hospitalized after an attack. I will no longer keep any peanut products in my home. I am not necessarily worried about when she is with me, its when she is without me. So it should be easier for your boyfriend being that he is an adult. It is life changing so I wish you luck, cause I need it too.

My son has life threatening allergies to peanuts.
Before his allergy diagnosis I was a HUGE peanut butter eater.
We now do not eat peanuts of any type and keep it out of the house as well.
It's been about 5 years and I can honestly say that I've gotten used to it and really don't miss it that much.
There are so many other great things to eat and there are substitutes.
There is Sunbutter, Soybutter, and other nut butters if he is not allergic to other nuts.
It will get easier in time. And I commend you for doing what you are doing! It's a great and caring thing you are doing for him to help keep him safe!
