I am 45 and was diagnosed with a peanut allergy last year. When I eat foods with peanuts or come in contact with someone who has, I have a severe reaction including vomiting, can't breathe and throat closing. Luckily this has not happened in awhile. However, Last Friday a woman was eating peanuts near me which I did not know. She was passing them around behind my back. I started to feel the reaction in my throat, nose and chest BEFORE I knew she was eating peanuts. I am wondering if my asthma has anything to do with this? And could some people be even more sensitive than others? A new level of sensitivity? My main question though is does anyone know anything about peanut dogs and people who train them? I live in NJ.

I have heard of angel service dogs, but I haven't heard of peanutdog.com before. There was a spot on one of the morning news shows earlier in the year about the Angel Service Dogs. That seems like a wonderful idea to have a K-9 friend who can alert you to the hidden dangers around you.

Yes, I would like one also. But it is out of my budget to get one. I have kids to finish raising first. :) The peanutdog.com place is about $5,000 cheaper than Angel service dogs.
My allergy has got worse over the years. So it is possible for it to get worse. My throat closes also when I even eat something that has been manufactured on the same equipment, which I accidently did a couple weeks ago.
Good luck with the peanut dog! I hope you are able to get one.

Tracy001 & binababy, I also knew about angel service dogs but had no idea these trained dogs were so expensive! Do you think there is an organization in your community that would help you with the cost of a much needed "service" dog for you? I'd start asking! Maybe even say you would take your dog to a local school/library to show how this dog helps you in your daily life. (As long as it is safe for you and if the schools/library would be interested...I'm sure they would be though!) Good luck!

There might be some community organizations willing to help you with the purchasing a service dog. This would certainly be of great help to you in keeping you safe where ever you go.

Any idea where I could start looking to see if I can get help?
I used to train dogs but not for tracking. I wish I knew how to do that! I would just train my own. Plus I would need the time. haha

I'd ask several different organizations for a smaller amount of money. Type up a letter explaining how severe your allergies are and how this dog would be a service do that could save your life. (state anything you feel would help your plea.) Tell them you would be willing to "show" your dog at one of their community meetings or at a school etc. Try the Kawanis, the Elks, the Rottary club, the Lion's club, the Eagles, the Knights of Columbus. Any "health" food store or an Allegist. Try FAAN too. Really "jazz up" how you could show off this wonderful service dog that will help protect your life. See if any of them would have a "benefit" for you. Proceeds from a poker night, steak night, etc. It can't hurt! Tell them you really need their help because your food allergy is so severe and life threatening. Ask a bank to "hold" the money until you have all you need to purchase the dog. Let me know if ANYONE helps....keep us all posted. Good luck. (They may ask you to help "fundraise" too.)
