I am back from the conference and just wanted to say how great it was!! I learned a lot of information.. including some new updates about Xolair. I was even recognized by Ann (CEO of FAAN) for getting a regulation passed in DE regarding students carrying epi pens. It was an awesome experience and I encourage everyone who has the opportunity to attend, to go!
If you want more specifics about the conference just let me know and I'll fill you in.
Dr. Wesley Bucks spoke.. he's a specialist from Duke Univ who has been working with faan for 13 yrs. Dr. Wood could not attend.

I would like to hear more as well.
I too would love to hear more about the conference.

I also was at this conference and kudos to you being such a great advocate in DE! I was impressed with Dr. Burks and found him very helpful. I was also pleased to hear the information about Xolair, don't have time to give the full report now but from what I took from it Xolair is going to be starting trials soon for peanut allergy. There is still a ways to go but the research looks promising to help against accidental ingestions at least. Sorry I can't give more info right now but it was defintely a good experience for me to go!
Dr. Burks was a very good speaker. He spent a lot of time talking about anaphylaxis and exactly what happens to the body during a reaction.. He stressed more than 10x the need for epinephrine and how it will not hurt a child to administer it (unless there are known heart conditions).
Those outgrowing pa have a very very low score on the cap rast to begin with. They still believe the majority of children can outgrow milk, egg, soy, wheat. Peanuts, treenuts, shellfish and fish are the most serious and will typically not be outgrown.
He still stood by the thought that only shellfish and fish cause airborne reactions. I know many have had different situations occur and I don't know if I believed his thoughts on that issue and a few others.
He felt that if hives presented in a child with pa and ingestion of peanuts were suspected, give epi and don't wait for other symptoms to follow. That was just for peanuts.
For Xolair, the study will start soon. They completed one already but don't have a dose that's adequate to treat the majority of children. Only about 20% reacted as they wanted. Now they have to find a dose that works for most. My DH states that this is the 2nd phase of a clinical trial. Once they find a proper dose, the next phase will involve thousands of people before it will ever make it to the FDA stage and out to the public. It is still years away.
He again stressed that opening a jar of pb in front of a food allergic child will not cause an anaphylactic reaction.
I thought this was interesting.. in china they boil peanuts and chop them in small pieces. By doing this, the proteins are so broken and diluted that a reaction will not occur if ingested! He said in china, there is a very low stat of peanut allergy.
They talked about refined peanut oil being safe... but it's very hard to really know which kind of oil is being used so it's best to just avoid peanut oil.
Hope this helps.. Lisa
went to the one in Chicago today and it was great also. Dr. Sicherer and Dr. Mofidi (both from Mt Sinai) spoke.
Some points from Sicherer:

Pamela, would you mind sharing some of those tactics for picky eaters? PLEASE!
Momma2boys, no problem. I've started an off topic thread. We've had very smooth dinners the last 2 nights already and I haven't been the usual 'short order cook' for my 2 y/o dd

I wanted to clarify that Dr. Scott Sicherer works with Hugh Sampson, who is known as the leading 'researcher' on food allergies.

I would love to hear more on what is going on with Xocloir - it seems that their is not much in the works since Tanox has been halted.
