Hello, just thought I would ask you experts a question! My son has been reacting all week, itchy eyes, sneezing and itchy mouth and throat. We have scrubbed his room, the house, thinking it was a hayfever type thing, benalyn has helped but he is still suffering. Anyway, tonight we thought we had found the cause of the reaction, when he took the lid off his fish food the allergy started right away. Of course the tank is in his room, he has been dropping the stuff everywhere.

My question is could peanut be in it or have we started a new shellfish seafood allergy.

It was WILKO fish food, ingredients..
cereals, fish and fish derivatives, yeast, derivatives of vegetable origin, vegetable protein extracts, crustaceans, oils and fats, vitamins and minerals.

It sounds to me like anything could be in there! The reason I am wondering wether it is a new allergy is because he does not eat fish, he hates it and also he has been using that fish food without problem for months. Any ideas!
I will try and contact the manufacturers but i don't know how long that will take!

you said it started when he took the lid off the fish tank? is he allergic to mold?or dust? maybe ther is residue of mold ect on the cover or in the filter of the fish tank?

If he has handles the fish food before and nothing happened maybe it is the tank?

just a thought.

I am pretty sure "vegetable protein" can include peanut. I have it on our peanut list to watch out for hydrolyzed vegetable protein.

A quick scan on google and it looks like it could be from alot of sources...peanut, sunflower, soy, etc.

Is he allergic to anything else beside peanut?

Well I emailed Wilko who sent me this reply:

'Dear Rebecca

Thank you for your email and enquiry. I have spoken to the supplier who have advised me that the product itself does not contain nuts. However the factory in which this product is produced does also manufacturer other food products. Therefore it is not possible to state categorically that no trace of peanut is present. I hope this information will be of some help to you.

Kind regards

I would not expect him to have such a strong reaction to may contain without eating it so I am thinking that maybe it is the shellfish. He is allergic to dust and moulds but this was a definite reaction to opening the fish food.

I am now thinking of getting more tests done but the next appointment is months away!

Hi,
Will your Pediatrican order the seafood RAST? You could have the results, and be able to discuss them at the Allergy appt. I always like to get tested *before* I have my Allergist's appt so I can discuss the results then and there.

Take care,
Daisy

Jason is also shellfish allergic, and has reacted on contact to fish food.

We suspect that Allison is also allergic to shellfish because she reacted with hives all over her body the one time she touched the fish food.

I would think shellfish allergy. Is there a way you can get him tested. I'm glad you found out that it was the fish food.
