Just wondered since we aren't big fish eater's.
Pa son literally throws up after eating tuna...so I of course don't push it(he has done it twice).
He doesn't want anything to do with fish but he is a picky eater anyway so it doesn't surprise me.
Actually at his next allergy appointment(I want him tested for fish and shellfish).
Anyone else's kids hate fish or been tested for it?
Thanks in advance!

DS is allergic to cod. We were told the cod allergy could turn anaphylactic any time so he does not eat fish (anyway.)
He is also allergic to roaches (part of the environmental tests) and I read an article in an allergy magazine that said shrimp are closely related to roaches so he will not eat shrimp either.
He is so picky this will not be a problem unless it is a contaminant.

Son 22 Allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, tomatoes, soy, milk, oats, fish.
Hi Smack!
My son tested positive to shellfish on his last RAST (he's not had any to my knowledge).
He was really enjoying salmon patties but after eating it the last time he made me a bit nervous w/ strange exaggerated breathing. I asked him what he was doing and he told me he was "practicing his asthma". Not good. Then the next day he had the runs. I wanted him tested for it on his last RAST but the Dr. didn't test him for fish other than some shellfish. GRRR!
When he was younger, he loved fishsticks, but vomitted afterwards.
Sorry to hear of your son's reaction to tuna. There's nothing like having a picky eater w/ a limited menu, is there?!
We have just now found a tuna that we can eat... most of them contain 'vegetable broth', which includes soybeans, which my kid is also allergic to. (I think I even learned that here... I remember being *so* surprised but the manufacturers confirmed it.) But the Costco/Kirkland brand really is just tuna & water. And my kid *loves* it. We also eat cod & flounder but we stay away from shellfish for the same reasons mentioned above.

Hi Smack!
The only fish my PA son eats is Starkist Tuna in Springwater when I make Tuna Helper.
Because he is anaphylactic to peanuts, we have stayed clear of all shellfish. He has not been tested for a shellfish allergy (don't know why, he should be tested) but we stay away from it.

DS LOVES fish!! Not fish sticks but the real thing. He loves salmon, tuna, packed in water, pike, perch, red snapper, sole, even jackfish. He doesn't like the tiny samplings of shrimp, crab or lobster he has tried, so we've never pushed him to try any more. He loves calamari, though!

mae,
OMGoodness I forgot he has tried calamari.
I make it all the time for dh and I and he wanted to try one(looks like an onion ring and he liked those when we had them a long time ago). Anyway, he liked it and it's not shellfish so I wasn't too worried.
It's good to know that a lot of pa kids are eating fish, he is just not a fish eater I guess. The reason why I want to get him tested for shellfish is because he was exposed to it(indirectly)and you know in order to have an accurate test you should have been exposed to the allergen at least once.
We ate at the Outback and he had chicken fingers that were made in the same oil that their shrimp was deep-fried in.
So, that would be his first exposure to shellfish(so it would be nice to know since dh and I love seafood)not that we would give seafood to him, just want to know if we have to be exceptionally careful when cooking it ourselves(cross-contamination)etc etc.
Thanks for your responses so far everyone!

My daughter has been tested for fish but not shellfish (I might ask when she goes for testing in two weeks time). She tested negative for fish. We were told by another allergist not to give her any new fish, keep only to the kind she has already eaten (tuna, and one brand of fishsticks). My sister has many Severe Food allergies which includes fish and seafood. I am not a big fish eater so I don't mind limiting my daughter's and son's fish exposure.
ds loves fish, almost every kind he has ever tried. He had shellfish at about age 8 and loves it. I try to discourage it and not cook it (not hard, dh now diagnosed with allergy) because I am afraid he will develop allergy. We are going back to allergist this month and thought I'd see what he says. Crab is his favorite!
Ds eats cod or sole regularly and tuna or salmon occasionally. We probably eat fish at least once a week. He has eaten shrimp, clams, oysters too...before we knew to think of limiting his exposure to other high risk foods. No problems here so far. Kristi
My dd eats fish sticks(3yo), but not lately. She has eaten enough that I do not think she is allergic, just decided she doesn't like them anymore. becca
My (almost) 4 year old son is only allergic to peanuts. However, we've kept him away from avocado and shellfish just in case. He loves all kinds of fish, which my husband usually fries, as well as tuna. We don't eat any fast food (except the occasional Coke or chocolate milkshake from Jack in the Box or Burger King) or go to restaurants since I'm so scared of peanut contamination. Saves us lots of money, and helps keep my weight just shy of the Dallas Cowboys'.
No, no fish for the picky eater PA child I have. My non-PA daughter will eat tuna or salmon and even try a fish fillet if DH and I are having them, but no way for Jesse.
I did have him allergy tested when he was 5, skin prick, and he did come back positive for trout. However, due to ezcema on his back, we believe that all of the positives that came back (including latex) were false. I have not felt the need (until his anaphylactic reaction last month) to have him re-tested at all.
It was funny this week at the grocery store.
We were going past the fish section and my daughter starts almost yelling about how the fish still have their eyes in and YUCK and there were other people of course and they're really quite struck by how cute this was.
I told her of this story about when I went to a trendy restaurant in Toronto and ordered a fish and it came to the table with it's eyes.
Well, that finished me for the meal and probably the night. Didn't touch the fish, I know that. Red Snapper.
I do know that I am extremely nervous about Jesse trying shellfish and did post about that under Living with PA to see if anyone else was nervous with other things that are known to be anaphylactic like shellfish and bee stings. We had a shrimp ring here at Christmas and I let my daughter try it no problem. I asked Jesse if he wanted to try it and he said no, but I know that if he had, I would be watching him like a hawk the whole time.
We don't eat a lot of fish in this house either, but I just discovered in my 44th year that I love tuna sandwiches. Can you believe it? Always turned my nose up at the thought of them and now I really really enjoy them.
Not salmon though unless they've removed all the bones and flaked it nicely in the can.
I do like fresh fish though and we did have something out of the Moira River here last spring
Jesse is a picky eater though. I'm still trying to equate the two things in my head - his allergy and his pickiness. I really feel there is some connection but I can't quite hit on it well enough that I feel it's sorted in my mind (if any of that made sense )
Best wishes!

Our PA son eats trout and salmon. He actually likes them even though he is a picky eater. We have avoided shellfish so far, because he is allergic to so many things.
