I just picked up my son's new epis for the school year. I had requested from his doctor that he prescribe us a twin pak.
Anyway, when I picked them up today, the Epis have MUCH clearer instructions on them as well as this very cool new carrying case with needle protection for EACH pen. It also has a connector so that both Epis can either be carried together or by themselves.

In the above link, you can see the new case as well as the new clearer instructions.

Our 2 epi-jr.s expire next month, so I'll be going out soon to get new ones. I'll be sure to ask for the new packages.
Was the cost the same?

I always feel bad for answering questions about healthcare because I know just about everyone in the world has to pay for something healthcare related.
DH's medical coverage covers everything. We do not have co-pays, or any other out of pocket expense. All prescriptions are free, too. Same coverage is for dental and eye wear. They cover 100% so I have no idea how much the epis cost but my guess is that it's still the same price although I have heard that prices vary depending on what pharmacy you get them at.

I just picked up my ds new epi's last week, and also got the new design. I really like them!
Anyway, I won't go into what I paid, since as the poster above stated, we'll all pay different based on our insurance. But, the cost was the same as it was last year when I received the older style.
My dh is self-employed, so we have private insurance. It doesn't cover perscriptions, but it will bring the price down a bit. I think I save about $10 per epi-pen.
"whoopie"
Because of this, we only have 2 epis on hand, one at home, one at school. We are planning on keeping the expired ones as back-ups this time.

If someone truly wants to know the price of an Epi-pen, there is a thread under Living with PA (I think the one about the expiration dates being disappointing) where prices have been posted.
I have been posting in that particular thread when I get a new Epi-pen because it was kinda keeping track of Epi-pen expiry dates, so I'll post there probably when I get the two I need, if I got the new design I'll post in this thread or another one, and I'll post the price as well in the other thread. I'll try to find it.
I think people just wanted to know if there had been a price change due to the new design or not.

I just picked up my son's new epi's for school tonight. When I opened them up i was thrilled to pieces about the new protective case that the pens are coming it.
My son would either break the old cases or lose the caps.
As to prices of the epi's. I also receive a two pack, I paid $20 and our insurance paid $75.27 for a total of $95.27 for two.
best wishes,
Renee
I just picked up 2 new epi-pen jr.'s today. They are the new style and expire in November 2006. I only had to call one pharmacy to get such a good date. *whew* The carrying case is nice, but I'll have to take one out to put it in the carrying case that I have clipped to my purse. My dh said just to put the new case IN my purse. Like I need more stuff in there. *sigh*
My insurance saved me a bit, but I ended up paying $94 for two. I have a $5 rebate from EpiPen.com for one of them. Better than a sharp stick in the eye!

Renee111064 and Darkmage, you both paid around $100.00 for TWO Epi-pens? Darkmage, I see you said your's were Juniors, but what about you, Renee?
Mine are approximately $95.00 each.
I have to call the pharmacy and remind the pharmacist that I need another one for tomorrow or Monday.
Oh, I get the Epi-pen (not Junior) for that price.
Best wishes!
For my newly diagnosed PA son, the cost of a regular Epipen was $112.87 cdn.
I do like the protective case that it came in. I will be order a Protectube (waterproof) from AAIA. http://www.aaia.ca/ENGLISH/Main_Pages/Resources.htm#carriers

Oh my soul, Codyman, this wasn't your original PA child, was it? So this means you have two? I know probably in some ways it doesn't make any difference (I mean my non-PA daughter lives like she's PA anyway as far as a peanut free home and not eating peanut products), but still. Wow. Yes, Wow!
I woke up this morning, came into the kitchen and there saw my son's epipen!! Still shaking my head, trying to figure it all out.
I suspect over the years and just hope not this year, that I will get a phone call or two from the school regarding a reaction from my DS. In terms of food, DS seems to be carefree whereas DD is not. DS is Lactose Intolerant and knows that he shouldn't eat pizza, or at least pizza with cheese, or at least without taking his Lacteeze pills or without asking me. However, a few weeks ago, while playing at the neighbours, he was offered pizza from the grandparents who were babysitting. DD knew not to take any and told DS not to as well but he ignored her and had a slice!! Later, had tummy aches and paid the price for eating cheese.
As soon as we left the Allergist's office DD was lecturing DS about eating food at the neighbours. DS was not pleased to hear the same thing over and over again. DD has had 6 years of living with her allergy, whereas DS has had less than 24hours to adjust.
I know in Chattanooga that I could buy two epi-pens together (the twin pack) for the same price as one. So if I purchased two different ones at separate times, or even minutes apart, I would have had to pay double.
I don't get the Epi-pen Junior and I don't get the Twinpack, but I thought I should post this information here as well:-
Well, I just picked up the Epi-pen I needed for September month (have to check the one at the school, I may need another one in October month yet - one Epi per month on my drug coverage). It's the new design one. I really like it! That new casing is super!
Cost was the same as the old style one I got last month - $94.00 plus dispensing fee.
Expiry date - January 2007, so 16 months?
Also, it came in a box as well - I've always just gotten the Epi-pen in the holder before, never in a box too.
Best wishes!
csc: I too have the "new and improved" epipen case and really like it. DD is wishing she had it for hers. I may phone DEY and ask if they could send one out to me for the epipen I keep in my purse.
We too received new EpiPens in the improved cases. I was thrilled by the improvements and new design.
I thought I would bring this up... Our pediatrician writes a prescription out for three double packs and states for home, school and EpiBelt. The latter part of the prescription is so that our insurance will cover all three at once. We pay one co-pay ($20). For us that works out to less than $4 per EpiPen. This might work for others insurance companies also. We also get inhalers dispensed three at a time and pay $10 for the trio.
Hope this helps someone.
Stay safe!
Just got the dual pens today. Much better case and written instructions! Gotta great exp date 10/06!!
I have just the plain old Epi in the cheap case. I went to the link and am disapointed for two reasons. I want the new one!! And I can't get the free info for the planner. Only available to U.S residents. Bummer.
My one Epi is 112 cdn dollars. Some of you are aware that I don't have benny's so this money is on top of all the other money I spend for meds. I do tell the pharmacy that I would like them to check the dates because some of them are under 1 yr until expiry. I have taken one back because of this. I just told the pharmacy that I needed it to be atleast one yr expiry. No problem.

Got the new ones too. I think the expiration is Jan 07!!! Definately an 07 date. I will likely freeze them before then.
Just in time for the strong case too. I have somehow lost one of my strong black tubes with the epipen in it! I think ds did the honors while in Costco. I think I took one from dd's back-pack(havint to juggle until I filled the new Rx, and them re-thought that, stuck two home base ones in my purse instead. Ds at some point is waving two wpis around in the store! YIKES! Put them away, move purse out of reach, and the next am I am missing an epi from the two in black tubes in dd's backpack. She has not touched them, it has been out of ds's reach. I think I must have accidentally left one in my bag, and ds lost it before I caught him waving the other two.
Ugh. I hate not knowing. I am quite confident dd did not touvh them. I trust her with that answer. I am such a scatter brain these days.
Anyway, I was glad the new ones are in such a strong tube since I have lost one! becca
I just got new Epis but they didn't have the new ones at my pharmacy. I called Dey and asked if they could send me just the new cases for them and they are sending them right out!!
I just checked at school this morning and I have to get another Epi-pen for October month. Jess had one in his Epi-belt that expired November 05, so I took that out this morning and gave him mine (one year expiry) and I'll order another one for October.
What I found was my pharmacy waited until they had run out of the old ones and then when they got the new shipment in, naturally, they got the new ones. It might help that I deal with a really small pharmacy that probably doesn't carry a lot of Epi-pens.
I replaced the one in the emergency medical bag.
Most of mine expire around the same time and since I can only get one a month, it takes four months of planning to get one each month to make sure we have all the bases covered.
Best wishes!
Cindy, if your Dr. prescribes the twin pack specifically, do they cover the two pens? That is how ours is prescribed. I also can refill that a couple of times, but he writes the original script for the twin pack, x2, so 4 pens are covered. I might have to do 2 co-pays for that, but it is still cheaper than the singles. It is funny that they cover it that way, but they do. If I had a script for four individual pens, I would have to pay 4 co-pays the same as for the twin pack co-pay.
Just a thought. It also has varied with my different insurances over these few years. becca

Just a note:
Anyone can get a "Letter of Medical Necessity" from their doctor stating the need for additional epis. The letter can then be sent to your insurance company for additional epis without having to wait for that window of the number of epis per...whatever your insurance covers.

I love the new cases! DH keeps two EpiPens in a foam clip-on case on his belt, and is always crushing the lightweight plastic cases that the EpiPens used to come in. These make me feel much more secure that I'll have time to get to my 2.5yo DD if she gets her mitts on them, too. She hasn't done it yet, and we try to keep them out of reach, but she's a wily one.
I'm not sure what our copay is on it. We have an Rx for twinpacks. I picked up a twinpack and an albuterol inhaler this weekend, and the total copay was $36US. I was thrilled to see that the expiry date on the EpiPens was Feb 07. It was a good decision to switch to a different pharmacy. I had been using Costco's pharmacy because I heard that the copays were lower (bogus information, obviously), but they refused to stock the twinpack even when we had an Rx specifically for it. We now use the pharmacy at Carrs/Safeway. They have better hours, esp. on weekends, and charge the same copay for the twinpack as Costco did for a single Epi. The expiry dates are better, too. And the attitude of the workers isn't surly. Lots to like!
Picked up the last of the four Epi-pens I need to complete "our set". January 07 expiry. New design, as expected. I did find out to-day that my drug coverage covers more than one a month since I just got one what? Last week.
Said to the pharmacist as I was leaving, okay, touch wood, I'll be back for four in a year.
