Here is the latest on Duncan Hines products - I received this via email today:
===========================================
I just wanted to let you know that I spoke with a representative at Duncan Hines and unfortunately Duncan Hines will be adding the caveat "manufactured on equipment that also processes peanuts and nuts" on all Duncan Hines cake mixes and all Duncan Hines frostings. Apparently, the new law forces the company to due this because they
also process coconut pecan frosting, brownies with walnuts, peanut garnish, etc. on the same equipment. The machines are "thoroughly cleaned" with an FDA approved cleaner, however, they are still
shared lines.

But aren't they correctly labeling products if the products are indeed "manufactured on the same equipment that also processes nuts and peanuts"? That is information I would like to know about when deciding whether to buy their products.
I think the issue is that while the "manufactured on the same line" and similar warnings make it easier for us to make choices (but at the same time limit those choices sometimes) it is not law to do so. They are saying that because of the new law they have to put 'may contain' or 'made on' warnings on every package when it is not true. The new law only applies to actual ingredients, not may contains.
Companies like Hershey and Kraft do not use dedicated lines, but plenty of us trust them. General Mills doesn't use dedicated facilities, but most people trust them also. I hope Hershy, Kraft and GM don't decide to put 'made in the same facility' on every package now because *that* would make all of their products off limits for us. FWIW I do not trust Duncan Hines because the last time I called, they said not only do they use shared lines, they don't do complete cleanings between different products.

I'm glad they're putting *some* kind of warning on Duncan Hines. Whenever I get a call from a mom about what cake mix to use for a party or school treat, I tell them no to Duncan Hines. Once a mom already made some cupcakes with this brand, and saved the box, which had no such warning. Thank goodness for pa.com members for having previously alerted me about DH.
Same here. I was telling the other moms "No Duncan Hines" on hearsay, but it's good to have tangible information now.
I'm liking the new labeling law.

They sure don`t know much about the new law. The new law does not require them to list shared equipment and it also does not require them to list if an item is in the same plant as an allergen. It only requires the use of regular words (using the word "milk" rather than or in addition to "casein", using the word "egg" rather than or in addition to "albumen", etc) and the new law requires them to list an allergen if it is in the natural flavors. It is interesting how they blame the new law for their new labeling when the new law doesn`t have anything to do with the changes they made.
