Do you think that there is a PA "cure" out there right now - traditional or non-traditional medicine wise? More non-traditional medicine wise that perhaps we are hesitant to explore?
Personally, I don't.
Do I think that there is something out there right now that will lessen my son's reaction severity? No.
But that's just me. Doesn't have to be everyone.
Best wishes!
hiya -
currently they are large scale testing a sort of "vaccine" to make PAs and TNAs less sensitive to the protein. I'm not sure of the specifics, but they think it'll be ready in a few years. Good news for those of us who have anaphalactic reactions...it means we will have more time to get to the hospital if needed and our initial reaction won't be as severe.
you can probably google it for more info

ajgauthier, welcome!
No, I know about the vaccine as it's regularly posted about here.
I just wanted to know what people thought about the "here and now" and if they thought there was possibly a cure out there.
Best wishes!
I don't think there is a cure out there RIGHT NOW but I do believe some day there will be.
I think diseases/allergies go in cycles. Right now peanut allergies is an allergy on the uprise. In a few years it will be something else.
Just like diseases. Decades ago our ancestors dealt with small pox and polio. They developed vacines and now those are gone. In our days it was mumps, measles, and rubella. Now they vacinate for those. Our children are being vacinated against chicken pox. That disease will be gone probably in a decade.
I believe that in a decade or so peanut allergies will be no longer but something else will take its place.....IMHO.....

Pam, very interesting post.
csc - I've never really thought about a cure. When I first developed my allergies I went through years of misdiagnosis. Being told - it will just go away on it's own, then being told they would find the cause and cure it, then back to it will just go away on it's own. But, they also said it would never develop into anaphylaxis. For years I believed them. I lived with the hope that one day I would get my life back.
When I finally realized that this was not going to ever go away - and nobody would ever be able to cure me - I took my life back.
I don't believe there currently is a *cure* out there. I don't hold out hope of one coming in my life-time. But, that vaccine would be pretty good. If they could eliminate the risk of may contain stuff - personally I'd be happy with that for myself. Although, I'd prefer the vaccine be useful for all food allergies. I'm hoping when they get it ready for peanut they'll start working on one for something else.
I'd love to see a cure for the kids though.
To tell you the truth I don't ever think about it. We know that Chris is allergic and we protect him.
Even if there was a cure I know for a fact Chris would never trust it and would never put an unsafe product in his mouth.
He has told us more than once about this.
This is what I tend to think of more often than PA issues.
I wonder if there will ever be a cure for Child abuse. It kills me to see children abused and there lives a mess from parents that have messed them up forever.
I see a little boy and a little girl from child abuse 5 days a week at school.
The parents sexually and verbally abused these babies before they could even talk.
Now luckily in wonderful foster care a woman is trying to turn his little life around.
The parents are God only knows where. Probably having more children to abuse.
Sorry CSC but that is something I tend to go off on and can not stop.
At least my son has had a normal healthy loved life.
If they find a CURE wonderful and if they don't I hope they keep trying.
Best of luck to all. CLaire

I listened to a story on NPR's All Things Considered recently that gave me hope (and someone is working on this for peanut.) When we talked with our allergist about this, he was hopeful, too. He knew of this and thought that this method could eventually replace regular allergy shots for some allergies. I must say, after they get food allergies down, I'd love to get this for cat allergies. I'm pasting a link to hear the story and a summary of it:

csc: THERE IS A VIRTUAL CURE!!! It is called TNX-109 and was tested on 80 people with SEVERE peanut allergies. These folks were able to ingest up to 9 peanuts without reacting after they had taken the drug, and continued to be immune for up to two months. To underscore the legitimacy of this study, it was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Please read my post in the "TAKE ACTION" category. TNX-109 was shelved after Novartis and Genentech sued its maker to stop research, because they were scared it would pose a competitive threat to Xolair, which is now also being tested for effectiveness in treating PA. In my post I give a website to read an article about this unconscionable action by these two greedy drug makers, as well as e-mail addresses to company officials so you can voice your outrage. TNX-109 must be brought to market, it is an extremely promising drug and should not be tabled because two deep-pocket companies could out-lawyer the little biotech start-up, Tanox, that invented it.

honestly? I haven't given it much thought. I don't think much about it.
*If* I think/worry about anything, (I'm usually too busy micromanaging to worry or think much about anything ), that's probably not what's worrying me or what I'm thinking about. (Finding a Cure, I mean.)
Trying to remember if I *ever* worried about finding a cure or even gave it much thought.
ahhh......no (clarifying: I don't think much about it) (edited to add that, I was on a tangent....)
