Peanut-Free/Nut-Free Directory
Our directory is intended as a resource for people with peanut and nut allergies. It contains foods, helpful products, and much more.
My son is only 2, and is not in school yet, and after 3 emails to the local Catholic school in our area without a response, I wanted to pose the question here.
I am a little unclear on 504 plans and if they apply to private schools? Does anyone here have their child in Catholic or religious affliated schools and what plans do they follow to keep your child safe?
My understanding is that 504 plans only pertain to schools which accept federal funding. For example, if a private school accepts federal milk subsidies, they would have to abide by a 504.
However, this is very rare. Most private schools are exempt from 504 plans. Sadly, if they are not mandated to do the right thing they most often do not.

(Hard to type when your pleasantly embarrased).
I'll look up those old threads. Or relocate some interesting items I found regarding the subject.
But, as I understand it private religious non federally funded schools do not have to comply with 504. I may be wrong. Please check. Not sure about Private, non federally funded, but I'll try to look up those items I mentioned.
I'll also look up My Story I posted here as well.
Synopsis: My child attended a small private, christian, non federally funded school. I had attended the same school, old site, in HS. I had faith in it. (Or at least the ideology behind it) And faith not just regarding PA/Nuts/Asthma.
To make this story even shorter: After walking in one day to bring in an alternate item for "Nacho-Day" (we didn't let him eat it, even though Peanuts/Nuts products were not listed on the item labels, since the labels were vague on several points). I was also there before lunch to sit with my son indoors during recess (very cold outside--cold induced Asthma as well as other triggers) since they would not accomodate certain requests related to Asthma and informed us as parents we were "over protective". (Different Story).
Anywhoooooooo. (this is getting long). I walk in and smelllllllllllll. Peanut Butter.
There were Resees Cups everywhere. I'm standing in the lunchroom and there is my cub sitting in the middle of all this at one of the lunch tables. (Assigned seats, with enough space between children for at least one other studen, my child at the end of the table------ But then again, this arrangement was with certain other precautions in mind)
Anywhoo again............. Seems there is Senior (HS----- the school had K-4 thru 12 grade) Candy Sales every day for the "Senior Trip". The selection was large, most of it "safe". However, Resees Cups were on the "menu". And seemingly the most popular. During every lunch period they were selling Resees Cups in the lunch room.
To top it off, the teen serving the Nachos up was eating two. Interesting way to eat them: He put his finger through the middle of each and munched away. No gloves either. Blech. (My intuition was right about the Nachos ----- It just never occurred to me the scenario I am describing could or would take place) I thought they "got it" and I thought I was dealing with persons on "a higher moral/ethical level". Go Figure. Not blaming the teen, just questioning the rational behind school administration seeing this was occuring in their school.
Well, I'm thinking "Of what good does it do to request of parents in my child's class not to send peanut/nut products in their children's lunches (and the parents were wonderful) when the school sanctions the availability and or sale of what is essentially gross amounts of peanut product to the entire school at lunch periods? My jaw was mopping up the floor.
Completely in shock, I made for my child airborne/contact/injestion, and took him home. I made administration aware.
We met with administration, we covered one other issue related to an "IEP type" plan he was supposed to have, but only materialized the week before they "asked" us to withdraw him (sent his books home prior to this -- no goodbyes to classmates either). The day after the meeting (which, I feel had went well.....)
This school did not have an RN. They didn't have a lot of things. But, my child did have a mother who was an RN.
I'll see if I can locate our letter to the school.
Disclaimer: I am not offering advice in any manner or form.

I didn't mean to put you on the spot. I just thought that you wouldn't mind sharing your story or pointing her to the right thread.
Now can I do this?

Absolutely wasn't offended.
Sure point away, since I can't find anything on a Search today. LOL.
Much appreciated if you found the items.

My daughter attends a Catholic school, K-8, and I do not believe that they have to conform to any 504 plan since, as far as I know, they are not federally funded. That being said, I provided the school with a "Personal Health Care Plan" for my daughter, which was drawn up with the help of a friend from a PA support group, along with specific requests included from my daughter's pediatrician and allergist. This plan, along with FAAN's school binder of information is what the school has to work with. So far, they are complying with every request made.
I too think the school has to conform to a 504,I could be wrong.

I have been waiting a very long time to find
out what happen to your cubs reffering to PA
issue in the process of trying to get them into the school system.
Please tell us more.
Better yet start a thread.
My heart goes out to you and yours,as we are
still dealing with those issues too.
Take care MommaBear

It's my understanding that unless they take federal dollars, they do not have to abide by 504.

Synthia, you are a sweetie.
Completely open here in that I'm not physically up to dealing with that box of demons. Don't know if I ever will be. And I doubt many here understand the magnitude of what it would take to get me off the scent. *Personally and with regard to only my children, and not intended as advice in any manner or form*: I think my children need their mother more than they need a public education. Or one that any private school could provide. (really, really, really laughing out loud)
I will, however, reraise a thread I started about a year ago.
Again, Synthia, you are much appreciated. Much like gentle breezes on oppressively hot days.

editing to add: I homeschool.
