There was an interesting study that showed the rate of miscarriage increased among women who grew up in a home where one parent smoked. Obviously there may be additional direct affects of second-hand smoke in the next generation.

Parents of FA kids, did your parents or your DH's parents smoke around you growing up?

Yep, my mom did, and still does. She's a chain smoker, always has been.

It's water under the bridge now...but I did have 3 miscarriages. I was going to ask you to post the link, but I think I'd rather not read it. We have 3 wonderful kids now so there's no point in looking back for me Meg

Good point.

My mom did till I was a freshman in high school. My dad's parents did.

DHs dad did and his paternal granddad did.

I've had no miscarraiges, however almost lost Aidan.

I have never smoked at all.

I also had in my 8 month a horrible rash (hives) down my legs. So it mighta been that.

My MIL read a thing on omega 6 definciency has led to hyper immunity hence the widespread allergies...and flaxseed can help.

IDK...gotta read more into it...very interesting.

My MIL was a social smoker in her twenties, just wanted to fit in and look cool, even though she was a nurse, they just had no idea. Other than that my parents never did, and my FIL never did.

Both my parents smoked. My Dad was a couple of packs a day. My mom smoked on and off for years--many attempts to stop. I believe my mom smoked while she was pregnant with me, but I am not sure (I was born just before the surgeon general's warning).
I never had a miscarriage, never had any problem with my pregnancies other than morning sickness.
No one has ever smoked around my kids, and all their grandparents have stopped at this time.

My father smoked half of what he lit, and the other half burned in a continual pyre throned by a tan or clear glass ashtray.

Remember those?

We had a barely 900 square foot home, and there was always a thick layer of smoke hanging a ways down from the ceiling.

But no, I've been pregnant three times, and delivered three babies. Currently 16 weeks pregnant now.

I did, however spend some time on several different occassions in the hospital as a child with bronchitis in a croupette tent.

I won't accept blaming the "mom" for peanut allergy, and I won't accept blaming the last generation either. LOL.

Or would you be talking about Calvinism? .....That there might be scientific evidence for visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the third and fourth generations? (Exodus, Deuteronomy)

slurping down a tremendously tasty cup of decaf....

Yes, my dad smoked around me when I was a kid. After I went to the allergist as a young teen and tested positive for an allergy to tobacco (among other things), he started going outside to smoke, thank goodness. Quitting would have been better, but at least the rest of us got to quit with the second-hand smoke.

My DH's parents both smoked for a time, but I'm not sure how old he was when they quit.

Mookie, the question was whether anyone smoked around *you* when you were a child. The theory is that cigarette smoke somehow damaged the eggs of the mothers of FA children. Were your parents smokers?

Corvallis, to answer the question, the rate of smoking in 1965 was 42%. It was down to 37% by 1970 and 33% by 1980. (Anybody younger than that shouldn't have kids yet!)

This very unscientific poll shows that 2/3rds of us who answered grew up in homes with a smoking parent. Certainly higher than the 42% smoking rate in the general population.

Perhaps if another 100 people answer, we'll have something statistically significant.

We really need a poll feature on this site.

What does this have to do with allergies?

We can come up with crazy theories and weird coincidental stuff that may cause allergies until we're blue in the face.

My father smoked around us when we were kids. All 3 of my siblings are smokers. Of those of us who have been pregnant, none of us have miscarried.

I'm raising my hand here. I had pneumonia a couple of times by the time I was two. I had bronchitis almost monthly half of the year until 7th grade or so. I developed asthma (finally) when I was in 5th grade. No wonder.

Dad smoked and quit. My mother still smokes (quit for a while, but my nephew's death drove her to it again).

No one smoked in the car, and they limited smoking to one room in the house pretty much. But I don't understand why after seeing me in a tent in the hospital (oh, and did I mention after developing asthma I made at least one ER trip per year for a shot of Epi??) the smoking continued.

We threw out every bit of peanut butter at the drop of a hat.

Why would it be so hard to get rid of this addiction?

Both of my parents smoked at one time but they both had quit long before they ever got married and had kids. I can't even picture my mother smoking since as long as I've been alive (and longer) she's detested ciggarette smoke.

I think I can raise my hand and tackle this one, too.

Because I was never addicted to peanut butter. Or eggs. But as someone who clearly never should have (or would have been predicted to) smoke myself.... Whoah, are those early role modelling constructs ever some powerful ones.

And this is one mean monkey to shake. I'll be a nicotine junkie as long as I live. No joke.

(Note, though, I quit loooong before ever having my DD-- and I never smoked in my house.)

Also amusing to me-- how many of us did numerous school 'art' projects back in the day whose final product was.... ta-da-- an ASHTRAY to take home???? Me! But my dad loved his ten pound Tijuana glass monstrosity. Loved it.

Count me in.

My mom smoked until I was about 2. She even tells the story of how she and her OB sat and had a nice smoke while they were in the hospital waiting on me to come. YIKES!

My dad smoked until I was probably 10.

We spent tons of time with my grandfather who smoked like a chimney. It was a constant stream of Lucky Strikes at his house.

No miscarriages for me, but my cousin who spent as many hours at his house as I did tried unsuccessfully for about 12 years to have a child and had countless miscarriages. (Her Dad did then and still smokes.)

So, for what it's worth. Always a new theory. I'm not against them, but I'm also not jumping in with both feet.

Dh's father smoked, but quit years before dh was born.

edited to add: no miscarriages, but dd was born 3 1/2 weeks early and was diagnosed with tachypnea. She stayed in the NICU for a week.

Nobody in my family has ever smoked.

I had two early miscarriages but they were related to an undiagnosed hypothyroid condition I had at the time.

My father smoked until I was twelve. I have had four miscarriages, but they were related to two clotting disorders I have (one autoimune, one genetic)so there is no connection there.
