I come to you today because I have been informed of a deadly new threat against our children. You may not have realised it, but this threat is all around you, and today I will open your eyes to it. That threat, my friends, is the common automobile.

Yesterday my son Timothy was hit by a fast moving vehicle while playing ball on the freeway near our house with his brother. Timothy is in hospital at the moment, but he's doing ok, and I thank Jesus for that every minute. What's apparent to me right now is that Timothy has a previously undiagnosed allergy to fast moving objects made of plastic, rubber, and steel.

We must unite against this threat. How many other children in this great nation of ours may have an undiagnosed allergy to the common automobile? When stationery, these objects present little harm to our loved ones, but when in motion these horrible death machines can seek out those allergic to them and kill them, KILL THEM DEAD.

I have decided that I will soon start my very own website, automobileallergy.com. Here I will lobby the DMV to get these horrible, horrible machines off our roads. Why should my Timothy have to avoid the vast expanses of asphalt that stretch far and wide across this great nation? Some of you may say "well why doesn't he just not play on the road", but I ask you, "why do your children just not avoid supermarkets and restaurants with nut products instead of ruining it for everyone else because your brat has weak genetics?". Please show the same courtesy and support for my beliefs that I do yours.

Thank you for listening!

I would like to respond because, believe it or not, I think there is a valid undercurrent in this post. I actually like the comparison of vehicles and peanuts. I feel it's a valid comparison, because they are both things that are found everywhere and that are dangerous to a few.

As a nation, we recognize that motor vehicles are dangerous. This is why we have speed limits, traffic signals, and signs on almost every corner. And what about in the areas where they are the most dangerous - areas near schools? We impose a 20 mile per hour speed limit in school zones. In fact, in Oregon, legislation was just passed that reduces the speed limit in school zones to 20 miles per hour AT ALL TIMES, not just when children are present.

Was this a popular decision? Heck no. But there have been several deaths recently where kids were playing at the school ground after school hours and got hit as they tried to return home. Is it fair to impose such a restrictive condition on all drivers when the lives of only a few individuals, in this case children, are at risk? The answer is of course. The right to drive quickly will never outweigh the value of a single life.

Enough said, I think.

to push the parallel even further, if we want to reproduce a *real* school environment with the car analogy, school and recess should both happen right on the highway!

Then we can compare the two.

Let's not forget trafic Cops. I've seen that post used for other arguments. It didn't work there either. Zero point for originality.

Oh how I wish I had it as easy as this poster. To not have life threatening food allergies to deal with. To have time to complain about someone else's issues. Although I think I could find a million+ other productive things to do

that is where I was a little over two weeks ago, and reading this post just makes me ashamed! how cruel and ignorant this person is.

I have started a thread in schools entitled "mommyofmatt got me thinking" If it could be useful to anyone, I will be more than happy to send it to you via email or you can just print it out from the post.

I have to apologize for this person whoever he/she may be. They say ignorance is bliss, this guy must be the happiest person on earth!

Why are threads like this allowed to stay up here? Where are the admins of this board? Now I know why I have been absent for a while...

Timmysmom; threads like this normally die a natural death when people fail to respond to them, which brings them back up on "daily topics".

(BTW, I only posted since it was already up today.)

I feel sorry to hear about the incident but on a freeway is a bit odd. Playing ball on a freeway is without doubt the eaisest way to get into an accident.
