My son has many life threatening allergies and is suppose to have a plan from the school in place. He has a 504 that says we are to have a meeting prior to the opening of school but that didn't happen. My son's Dr. And Myself have made a plan and we are still waiting for the schools. In the mean time I have pulled my son out of school due to the school changing the plan the Dr. and myself have come up with. They think my son has time while they walkie talkie all over to get someone trained to go into the lunch room or out to recess. I have told the school to let my son self administer the benadryl himself. He has a Para aide with him but she is not allowed to give him the benadryl or the epi-pen.Due to a State Statute in CT.that does not allow her to. My son is 8 years old and very aware of when he is having a reaction. We can not trust in the school nurse for she has already shown total ignorance in my son's situation. To the point of making up a medical plan that could have cost my son. The nurse did this without talking to the Dr. or myself. I have been told my son cannot carry his medicine in a fanny bag. The Superintendent told me to put my son in another district.I have asked for letters to be sent home about the peanut and nut allergy and was told no it couldn't be done. If anyone has any information on any situation like this in CT. with an out come please let me no.

I don't know anything about CT schools, but it sounds like it is time for a lawyer and the courts to intervene. Each child has the right to a public education, no matter what. Give them hell! Contact papers and media if you have to. Fight for your kid, no matter what the cost is to you. Whatever you do, don't back down. This kind of stuff really perturbs me. I'll write a letter if you need me to. Just e-mail me with specifics and I'll give them a peice of my mind for you. I'd love to.

It sounds like the same thing I went through when my daughter entered kindergarden. She is now in 2nd grade. Call Dept. of Education in washington,D.C. you will see immediate action! They did wonders for me and my daughter. I live in Ohio but every state needs to start educating these schools about the severity of this allergy. Hang tuff and try to stay strong. I felt the world was against us but the outcome will be great. We have red carpet treatment, plus every teacher and aide and even the maintenence man was taught how and when to use the epi-pen they are located in 4 places of the school with quick access. All the teachers and I work very closely and school is no longer a nightmare for my little girl. If you need me for anything please email me at kelci@1st.net. I will help in any way possible. We are all here for each other.

Get Educated, then fight back. When the district figures out you have researched your rights, they will stop trying to snowball you. A 504 plan is the law - they must follow it. Does the CT law not allow training of para. to administer med? I am in LA, but my parish is usually on the safe side. Any teacher/para. can get trained to administer med. The special education nurses also train child specific when needed. My child's epi is in office, but the school is small, and she has 4 Aunts teaching there.
