Hi! I've just been visiting the Monterey bay area in CA and I've gone into some of the chocolate stores around here. I would NOT recommend Pieces of Heaven, located in Carmel's Barnyard Mall. THat store was reaking of cross-contamination. They had plain and nut caramel apples next to each other, peanut cookies and other stuff next to each other. Not to mention the 3 or 4 varieties of peanut butter ice cream. I did not feel safe AT ALL even trying to eat their treats. I really wanted to say something, to educate them on PA/nut allergy, but I somehow didn't feel it was my place. The other place would be Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. They, too had caramel apples all over the place under the peanut/nut apples. I've never had a reaction from there before, but I am just scared to even try the stuff again. I sometimes wonder if I am being too cautious or irrational, but it would be nice to walk into a chocolate store and feel safe (I do with Fannie May-ONLY their chocolate walnut clusters, though). I will not eat any of their candy in the boxes though since I don't know which have peanuts in them.

No offense, but it is a regular (not nut free or peanut free) candy store. You shouldn't feel "safe" there.

I guess that I just don't want us to forget that others eat and enjoy nuts and that while we can ask for certain precations, we still need to develop our own comfort zones.

I know it is a regular candy store. I *have* been able to eat in regular candy stores, including Fannie May candies. I know that many of you have MUCH stricter comfort zones than I do, and even so, I still thought I would post about that experience for those who may have my level of comfort. Actually, to some extent, while I like this site, I think that some people here are overly cautious, but then I don't really know your situation. I do know how much I can tolerate, and what I can eat. When I say that, I mean by the airborne particles, b/c I will not EVER eat a peanutty product.

I do not think that people are 'overly cautious' on this website-people here are cautious enough to protect themselves and their loved ones who have nut allergies. Nut allergies are unpredictable-just because you may have had a less severe reaction in the past does not mean that you will not have a full blown anaphylactic reaction in the future. Cross contamination and mistakes happen in restaurants, coffee shops, candy stores, etc. all the time. My first full blown anaphylactic reaction happened that way, when I wanted a regular coffee and instead I was given coffee with almond flavouring. If you want to protect your life, you simply cannot depend on trusting people who work in restaurants/coffee shops/candy shops. These individuals on the most part, have absolutely no idea about anaphylaxis and food allergies. Those working in these institutions who know about life-threatening food allergies have usually, enough common sense to advise those with nut allergies to avoid products when cross-contamination is a factor.
