We recently moved from Oregon to Massachusetts, and felt that flying was our only option rather than cross country driving with a three year old and a one year old. We flew Delta even though they are not peanut free because my husband flies them for business so much we thought we might be able to get better consideration. Well, when I called Delta before flying to talk about my daughter's peanut allergy, they were just awful. I grudgingly got told that they would not serve peanuts in our "immediate area" and when I asked what that meant, the operator didn't even know, and gave a big sigh (you know the one) when I asked for clarification.
Once we were at the airplane, though, the flight attendants could not have been more wonderful. We had a flight with one change of planes, and on both flights they not only didn't serve anything with peanuts anywhere on the plane, they made an announcement to the entire plane asking people not to eat anything they might have brought themselves because of an allergic child on the flight. I was so surprised, given some of the feedback on this forum. I was concerned about flying Delta in the future, but I am very reassured with the reaction of these flight attendants, especially since the response was the same on two different flights. It's just too bad the corporate people don't seem to get it.
