Can anyone suggest a coconut derivative free shampoo?

If you are allergic to coconut, what shampoo do you use?

My DD is the one with allergies.

For bar soap we use Kiss My Face soap - it is olive oil based. I find it at Shaws Supermarkets and Whole Foods. They make shampoos etc... but I have never seen their kids line so I did not do any further research to see if those items contained coconut.

Coconut in many forms gives DD trouble. There is one "version" called Cocamidopropyl Betaine that she does tolerate. Doing different research I found out it was a man made substance - perhaps how they process the coconut oil is why she tolerates it. Anyway, any shampoos (kids suave) and other cleaning things like Wet Ones that contain this form she tolerates very well.

"Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Artificial substance frequently referred to as a natural substance made "from coconuts" on the labels of shampoos. It's a secondary surfactant, used in combination with other, stronger surfactants."

The following forms of coconut in products cause her terrible skin rashes and eczema and depending on the substance - hives as well.

"Cocamide DEA, MEA, and MIPA
See alkyloamides.

Alkyloamides
Groups of synthetic fatty acids designated as DEA, MEA, MIPA, and PEG. Used for thickening, gelling, emulsifying, emolliency, skin and hair conditioning, foam boosting, foam stabilizing, wetting, opacifying, lubricating, powder binding, skin protecting, fungicidal properties, and superfatting. Found in shampoos, bubble baths, and liquid hand and body cleansers. Harmful when contaminated by nitrosamines and harmful to the environment."

I don't know if her tolerance is typical or if she is just lucky. We don't know anyone else with this allergy.

I would strongly suggest that you patch test if you are going to try. Put a little on the inside of your wrist or inside of your elbow and wait. That is what I do with DD.

I am going to veer off here just a little.....the PPs seem to know what they're talking about.

DD seems to be allergic to coconut,(based on reactions) and we know to look for coconut oil as an ingredient in things. I have tried to do more research, but just ended up confused.

Is palm- or palm kernel-oil a coconut-related product? I never know if these are things we should avoid.

DD has skin problems, more acne based than exzema, and I wondered if there are palm oils in her products, could that be a cause?

Here is a blurb about Coconut Oil and Palm Oil - not the same thing but very very similar. Palm oil comes from another fruit. They are all tropical oils.

This is a web site about Palm Oil - interesting.

Sometimes I am amazed at what we all have to learn to keep our kids safe!!!
